Job Description
Job Summary Are you interested in making a meaningful impact on the biodiversity and ecological resilience of Raleigh's parks, greenways, nature preserves, and open spaces? The Raleigh Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources (PRCR) is seeking a Natural Resources Technician to support land stewardship and natural resources management initiatives. This role helps conserve and improve natural areas across City-owned properties through ecological surveys, wildlife and habitat monitoring, invasive species management, educational outreach, and collaboration with staff and volunteers. Duties include both field-based and office-based tasks depending on project needs. About You You are enthusiastic about environmental conservation, enjoy outdoor work, and are eager to contribute to meaningful natural resources projects. You are comfortable collecting ecological data, using field tools, collaborating with volunteers and partners, and communicating with the public about environmental topics. About Us This position supports the Raleigh PRCR Land Stewardship Program, part of the Parks and Natural Resources Division. Raleigh Parks manages nearly 10,000 acres, including 220 parks, 120 miles of greenways, 4 lakes, and 4 nature preserves. The department employs over 425 full-time and up to 1,800 seasonal staff. Raleigh is a member of the Biophilic Cities Network and prioritizes equitable access to greenspace and vibrant community experiences. Assist in collecting ecological field data for plants, wildlife, and habitats. Use GPS/GIS tools for mapping and field data collection. Perform habitat management including removal of invasive species using hand tools and herbicides. Assist with public outreach programs and educational materials. Work closely with staff, volunteers, and partner agencies to achieve program goals. Your Qualifications - Education & Experience High School Diploma or GED and some college-level coursework in a Natural Resources-related field (Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, or similar). OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties. Valid NC Pesticide License required or obtained within three months of hire Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of native flora/fauna of the Southeast, especially conservation-listed species.
- Knowledge of non-native invasive species in the region.
- Experience using GIS/GPS for field data collection.
- Valid N.C. Driver's License or ability to obtain within 90 days. Valid NC Pesticide License required or obtained within three months of hire KSA's - Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of ecological principles, species identification, and habitat management.
- Skills with field tools, GPS/GIS equipment, and environmental data collection.
- Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
- Ability to collaborate with staff, volunteers, and partners and communicate effectively in public education settings.
