Job Description

Forestry Technician 1 (2 Positions) State of New York - Environmental Conservation, Department of Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 $19.33 an hour - Full-time $19.33 an hour - Full-time The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description A Forestry Technician 1 will conduct a variety of tasks related to the collection, handling and storage of tree and shrub seed in support of operations at the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery.
Duties May Include:
  • Collecting and harvesting seeds, cones and fruit of trees and shrubs used in the propagation of forest nursery stock.
  • Perform routine maintenance of seed orchards and seed production areas using forestry hand tools, gas and battery powered saws and various agricultural machinery such as tractors and front-end loaders.
  • Clean, process and properly handle and store forest nursery seeds while utilizing appropriate protocols and guidelines established by program management.
  • Conduct seed purity, moisture and germination testing in a laboratory setting.
  • Maintain records, databases and other systems to track and record seed sourcing and other storage data.
  • Utilize a Geographic Information System to identify and map seed collection sites, seed orchard locations and future planting sites.
  • Conduct other forest nursery duties as assigned.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silvicultureOROne (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests. Additional comments regarding the vacancy. Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.

Must be able to work in remote areas.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required.

Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required.

Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response.

Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.

Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
