The position has a 450-hour term of service beginning May 18 and ending August 19. The member is expected to serve 40 hours per week, including weekends (2 days off during week days). Schedule may vary due to weather, visitor use levels, or operational requirements. Additional employment with Common Outdoor Ground (COG) after August 19 may be possible.Position Overview:
The Wyoming Conservation Corps (WCC) is seeking two (2) applicants to fill an AmeriCorps Individual Placement position with our partner organizations. The position has a 450-hour term of service. Common Outdoor Ground, is seeking a motivated and reliable Recreation Site Stewardship Technician to support recreation operations on public lands in southeast Wyoming with a primary focus on the Lake Owen area within the Medicine Bow Routt National Forest. This position focuses on the upkeep and improvement of campgrounds, trailheads, day-use areas, and other public recreation sites (beyond Lake Owen). The role is ideal for individuals interested in outdoor recreation, natural resource management, or tourism with an emphasis on the Mountain West. The AmeriCorps member will be based out of Laramie, Wyoming and must provide their own transportation to and from work locations. Lake Owen is one hour southeast of Laramie. Campsite/cabin available closer to the site. It sits at 9,000 feet and provides recreation opportunities for camping, picnicking, biking (on the Rail Trail Network), fishing, and access to ATV trails. Why This Position? This role provides hands-on experience in the management of public recreation infrastructure and visitor services. It is well-suited for students, recent graduates, or anyone exploring a career in outdoor recreation, tourism management, land stewardship, or public agency work. You'll gain practical experience maintaining real-world recreation assets while working in Wyoming's beautiful mountain landscapes.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Members will support COG in fulfilling its mission to provide community support for the sustainability of public lands in southeast Wyoming. Members will primarily serve as a pair, with additional support from COG staff, board, and volunteers. Interact professionally with the public, providing basic information about site rules, safety, and forest resources. Perform routine maintenance at recreation sites, including maintaining picnic areas, managing trash removal, and checking/restocking supplies in restrooms. Inspect facilities such as campgrounds, signage, kiosks, and trailheads for safety and functionality. Conduct basic repairs such as tightening fixtures, minor carpentry, replacing hardware, painting, etc. Assist with vegetation management around recreation sites (e.g., trimming, clearing minor debris). Report site conditions, maintenance needs, and visitor-use issues to supervisors. Follow established safety guidelines for field work, equipment use, and working independently in remote areas.Physical Working Conditions:
The candidate may be required to work alone or in a small team in a backcountry setting. Outdoor survival skills and navigation are required. The candidate will be required to navigate independently with a map in remote locations. Use of GPS units and basic tablets/smartphones will be required. Ability and willingness to hike extensive distances (3-10 miles/day) during diverse weather conditions and be able to safely operate 4-wheel drive vehicle and ATV on narrow mountain roads.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
AmeriCorps participants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents High School Diploma or GED 18 years of age Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria Ability to lift 30+ lbs with or without a reasonable accommodation Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the Driving for University BusinessSAP DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Interest or background in outdoor recreation management, tourism, natural resources, or a related field. Experience working in outdoor settings, volunteer trail work, facility maintenance, or similar roles. Familiarity with Forest Service lands or Mountain West public-land issues. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot site issues as they arise. Basic maintenance skills (hand tools, minor repairs, simple mechanical tasks). Reliable transportation and the ability to travel between dispersed recreation sites. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and traverse uneven terrain.REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS
