Job Description

A private farm estate in Upperville, VA is looking for a full-time, invasive species specialist. The primary responsibilities will include assisting farm and property staff in a sitewide conservation program that focuses on the removal of invasive species as well as implementing sitewide projects that promote healthy flora and fauna. This position will report into the Invasive Management Team Lead. Job Responsibilities Assist in managing invasive plant contractors as well as perform removal of invasives including mechanical removal with skid steer, herbicide application, and/or using hand tools/chainsaw. Support ecological health and resiliency through habitat restoration. Coordinate and conduct removal of invasive species. Promote successful native plant regeneration through plant protection, forestry, replanting strategies. Manage GIS database. Create new maps and collect GPS data as necessary. Procure and maintain materials, supplies, and equipment to carry out stewardship activities. Assist in trail maintenance of several miles of trails. This includes removing downed trees, cleaning up trail edges, seeding, etc. Help with installation and maintenance of wildlife habitat including blue bird houses, duck boxes, wildlife meadows, upland bird habitat, etc. Assist in maintaining farm equipment including skid steer, John Deere tractors, farm UTV's, and tools. Help in a variety of conservation means/methods including tree tubing, hack/squirt invasive trees, seeding, etc. Be a proactive team player with other members of the farm team including the estate manager, gardener, general manager, and cattle team. Assist team with mowing/bush hogging needs. Additional property and maintenance duties as requested. Preferred Skillset Preferred background, knowledge, and/or degree in botany/biology/forestry management Knowledge of herbicides and application methodology Ability to exercise responsible safety protocol Comfortable working outside daily, including in inclement weather conditions Effective communication skills with a positive team-player mentality Self-motivated and eager to learn alongside farm team Excellent problem-solving skills Tech savvy with the ability and willingness to learn software land management programs Can lift up to 50lbs Valid Driver's License; confident driver with clean driving record Successfully complete reference check process and in-depth background investigation, including a cyber/social media risk evaluation Able to legally work within the United States for any employer
