This is in addition to standard leave accrual for employees. Why does the job exist? The core mission of the New Mexico State Land Office (NMSLO) is to responsibly generate revenue through a wide array of leasing activities on state trust lands on behalf of public schools, universities and hospitals. The Forester position is tasked with serving as lead specialist for assigned projects and serve as team member to provide technical assistance to other specialists on natural resource projects. This position will provide technical expertise in the areas of forest and watershed health and ecological conditions in forest and woodland ecosystems on state trust lands. This position serves as the NMSLO technical specialist in forestry related issues and represent the NMSLO in forest and watershed health and public education/outreach activities as well as inter-agency and public meetings. How does it get done? The Forester is responsible for conducting forest inventories and resource assessments, monitoring forest health, and developing forest management plans to promote the health of the resource and reduce wildlife risk on state trust lands. This work will be completed in collaboration with other agency staff and often in close collaboration with additional state and federal agencies, and other external partners. This position will oversee project management including development of project plans, procurement, vendor management, stakeholder engagement, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and preparation of closure reports. This position will prepare technical reports and guidance related to forest management and proposed uses of state trust land. This position will maintain tracking of forest health and project outcomes using mapping and spacial analytics tools, Microsoft Office programs, and other tools as required. This position may also be asked to represent the Commissioner of Public Lands on committees or working groups related to forest management. Who are the customers?

Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree in forestry or a bachelor's degree in a related natural science and six (6) years related experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must obtain and maintain a State of New Mexico Driving Certificate. Working Conditions Work is performed in the field (approx. 40%) and in an office setting (up to 60%) with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer to include working with computers, copiers and printers, and phone usage with extended periods of sitting, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling.
