Weights & Measures Apprentice Print Apply  Weights & Measures Apprentice Salary $35,000.00 Annually Location Freehold, NJ 07728 Job Type Full-Time Job Number 2025-07 Department Weights & Measures Opening Date 04/28/2026 Description Benefits Description Monmouth County Division of Weights & Measures is looking to fill a full-time, Weights & Measures Apprentice position. Work hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
THE CANDIDATE
  • will be required to possess a drivers license valid in NJ and in good standing.
  • will be required to successfully complete the Weights & Measures training program conducted the State Office of Weights & Measures.
  • will be required to learn to inspect and test all types of weighing and measuring devices
  • will be required to organize fieldwork, analyze Weights & Measures enforcement activities, and develop work methods.
  • will learn to perform activities to inspect and test all types of weighing and measuring devices using scales, leverage devices, volumetric instruments, and other standard and metric methods to determine accuracy of equipment tested and sealing approved equipment.
  • will learn to inspect and test all types of weighing and measuring devices used to pack commodities, weigh vehicles, dispense gasoline, fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas, and other petroleum products.
  • will learn to assists in the operation of heavy-duty scale testing units and auxiliary equipment, volumetric meter provers, pharmaceutical and other specialized testing equipment.
General laptop and computer knowledge is needed to complete fieldwork daily. Must be able to wear a respirator, and be fit tested, as necessary. Candidate may be required to lift up to 100 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation, as an essential function of the job.
ADVANCEMENT
Appointee's work performance will be reviewed and rated semi-annually during each twelve (12) months of the three (3) year apprenticeship program. Upon successful completion of the thirty-six (36) month apprenticeship program, appointees will be eligible for advancement to the title of Weights and Measures Inspector 1 in State service, or to the title of Assistant Superintendent of Weights and Measures in local service, in accordance with New Jersey Civil Service Commission procedures. The inability of an employee in the Apprentice title to satisfactorily complete the training period and/or attain a level of performance warranting advancement to the title of Weights and Measures Inspector 1 in State service or the title of Assistant Superintendent of Weights and Measures in local service, shall be considered cause for separation from employment.
