THE POSITION
Parks Crew Supervisors plan, schedule, assign and supervise the work of highly skilled maintenance crews implementing comprehensive parks, trees, and landscape maintenance and volunteer programs. This position is a full, first-line supervisory level in the maintenance series. Incumbents are responsible for the field supervision of crews implementing comprehensive parks, trees, and landscape maintenance programs.

The successful candidate for this position will possess: A strong customer service orientation Proven leadership abilities Strong project planning, scheduling and oversight skills An interest-based approach to problem solving Highly effective public contact skills Knowledge of current technology and computer applications used in office and field maintenance environments Strong writing skills Substantial, relevant landscape maintenance experience along with current certifications and/or continuing training and education related to landscape maintenance Urban tree management experience is highly desirable

For more information about this exciting opportunity, please contact Alberto Sanchez at Examples of Duties and Responsibilities The following are examples of typical essential duties and responsibilities: Plan, schedule, coordinate, assign and supervise the work of crews engaged in park and landscape maintenance and special projects work Determine personnel, equipment and materials needed for work assignments Ensure safe use of equipment and material and the use of safe working methods, techniques and procedures Train, evaluate and discipline assigned staff Interpret, explain and enforce provisions of the appropriate Memorandum of Understanding and the Personnel Rules and Regulations Inspect work in progress and upon completion Determine and recommend equipment, materials, and staffing needs for assigned maintenance projects Assist in planning the annual budget Assist in maintaining inventory of parts and supplies Order necessary authorized materials and recommend capital purchases Maintain a variety of records and prepare reports of work performance Operate equipment and perform the most difficult and complex maintenance tasks Monitor and review work performed by contractors on behalf of the City Plan and design system modifications as required to enhance park maintenance efficiency Receive and resolve complaints from the public regarding maintenance matters and projects and/or maintenance staff activities Receive and act upon emergency calls
Required Qualifications Knowledge of:
Materials, methods, equipment and tools used in park maintenance, urban forestry, and park and playground construction and improvements; common landscape pests and diseases and how to eradicate them; safe handling and operation of a variety of maintenance and construction equipment and materials related to parks, trees, and landscape maintenance; principles and practices of effective employee supervision, including training, performance evaluation and discipline; recordkeeping and reporting procedures; methods of estimating time, cost and equipment necessary to perform assigned work; purchasing procedures, forms and techniques; safe and efficient work practices and procedures; inventory control procedures.
Ability to:
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; deal effectively and tactfully with the public in responding to inquiries and resolving complaints; supervise, train, evaluate and discipline subordinate personnel; work effectively with persons from other City departments, other agencies, the public and business community; inspect work in progress and upon completion; identify areas needing improvements; read and interpret blueprints, diagrams and construction drawings; operate and maintain a variety of maintenance equipment in a safe and efficient manner; determine equipment, personnel and materials needed for specific jobs; set priorities and meet deadlines; design and maintain systems appropriate to parks maintenance; identify and implement effective courses of action to complete work assignments; and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Experience and Education:
Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Three years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape maintenance including at least one year at a lead or supervisory level;
Education:
Specialized training in landscape maintenance and the care of trees and plants.
License or Certificate:
This classification requires the use of a City vehicle while conducting City business. In order to operate a vehicle, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and must possess, or be able to obtain, an appropriate valid California motor vehicle operator's license. A satisfactory driving history is required of all applicants seeking a position as a Parks Crew Supervisor with the City of Santa Rosa. Depending upon assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain a Pest Control Applicator License as issued by the State of California, may be required. Additional Information Physical Requirements The work is performed indoors in a shop office environment and outdoors in field conditions occasionally involving heavy traffic, steep terrain, muddy construction sites and exposure to poison oak. Outdoor work is performed in a variety of weather conditions and involves walking on rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. Incumbents communicate with others orally, face to face and by telephone and/or two-way radio. Incumbents prepare, read, interpret and explain graphic information such as schematic drawings, layouts or other visual aids when assigning work. When using office equipment such as a computer keyboard, mouse and/or calculator, incumbents make fine, highly controlled, repetitive arm/hand movements.
