Job Description

BUILDING & GROUNDS WORKER I SALARY
$26.27 - $31.95 / HOURLY
CLOSING DATE/TIME
This will be a continuous recruitment until sufficient applications have been received.
DEFINITION
Under close supervision as a learner, cleans and maintains the Authority's grounds, resident units, and office buildings; and does other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONSCleans and maintains the Authority's grounds, yard areas, resident units, and office buildings; and Prunes and trims trees and shrubs; andMows lawns, cuts grass, and trims hedges; andPlants trees and shrubs; and Re-seeds lawns; andOperates power lawnmower, hedge-clippers, power or hand-saw and hand-clippers; andMakes minor adjustments and repairs on normally used equipment; andBoards and un-boards windows; andDoes yard work and fence repair work; andRepairs sprinklers; andPicks up paper and debris; andRemoves large cast-off items dumped in garbage areas; andCleans and keeps garbage chutes clear; andMay use non-restricted chemicals in vacant units and utility/community areas; andCleans and scours sinks, showers, toilets, and stoves; andCleans and scrubs walls and floors in halls and in other areas; andCleans windows in vacant units and office areas; andCleans all Authority office areas; andCleans passage ways and community areas at housing sites; and Vacuums, dusts, and empties trash; andDrives trucks in picking up furniture or debris; andLoads and unloads trucks; andMaintains simple job records; andWorks inside and outside; andIs subject to inclement weather
MARGINAL
FUNCTIONSPerforms other related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One year of demonstrated successful work experience, and possession of a valid California's driver's license and have and maintain an insurable driving record. Bilingual skills in ASL, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and/or Spanish are a plus.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.
KNOWLEDGE OF
The special problems of low-income and minority populations.
ABILITY TO
Perform work that requires physical strength and agility, including ability to stand and walk for up to six hours, push or pull for up to four hours, lift and carry up to 100 pounds, and other abilities as specified in the State of California Division of Industrial Accidents form RB-91 for this classification; learn rapidly and follow oral instructions; learn to operate mechanical equipment; learn to make adjustments and minor repairs on normally used equipment; and maintain simple job records.

Those applicants whose education and experience most closely match the requirements of the position will be invited to compete in the examination process. Candidates who compete successfully in this examination will have their names placed on a List of Qualifiers. An appointment will be made from the List. For some positions, an experience/training rating and/or written evaluation of candidates will be used in lieu of the oral examination. The names of the highest-ranking candidates will be placed on the List of Qualifiers, and the final selection will be made from this List. College degrees or units required for the position will be verified prior to final appointment. If this information cannot be verified for a candidate, the candidate's name will not be placed on the List of Qualifiers. All appointments are subject to the approval of the Executive Director. All prospective employees must pass a physical examination and drug screening by an Authority-designated physician. A pre-employment criminal history background check will also be conducted for all positions. For positions requiring use of an Authority vehicle, candidates' driving records will be checked prior to appointment. To be eligible for appointment, each candidate must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the Authority's insurer. All prospective employees must also provide proof of American citizenship, or legal resident status and the legal right to work in the United States. Prior to becoming permanent, new employees must successfully pass a probationary period.

SICK LEAVE
is accrued at the rate of one day per month.
VACATION LEAVE
for new employees is accrued at the rate of 10 days each year. There are also fourteen (14) paid holidays each year.
RETIREMENT
- The Authority is a member of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). The Authority also participates in Social Security.

is available.
GROUP LIFE INSURANCE
is fully paid by the Authority. Management, supervisory, professional and confidential employees are also entitled to a management benefit package allowance and five days of administrative leave per year.
