Job Description

JOB Build, improve, and make a lasting impact on the spaces our community uses every day with the City of Gunnison Parks & Recreation team! As a Projects Technician, you'll take on hands-on work that directly enhances parks, trails, and public facilities—from irrigation system installation and repair to small construction and improvement projects. This seasonal position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving problems, and seeing the results of their work come to life in real time. In this role, you'll work both independently and alongside a team to tackle a variety of projects, including troubleshooting irrigation systems, completing carpentry and concrete work, and installing park amenities. No two days are the same, and the work is both physically active and highly rewarding. Hourly rate ranges from $22.63 to $25.44 per hour depending on qualifications and experience, plus a $1.84 per hour incentive completion bonus at the end of the season.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
General Purpose:
The Parks & Recreation Projects Technician is a seasonal position responsible for supporting the maintenance, repair, and improvement of City parks, facilities, and public use areas. This position focuses on irrigation system installation and repair, as well as small construction and improvement projects. The Projects Technician works both independently and as part of a team to enhance the safety, functionality, and appearance of City assets.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist with installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of park irrigation systems, including sprinklers, valves, controllers, and mainlinesDiagnose irrigation issues such as leaks, pressure problems, and coverage deficienciesPerform seasonal irrigation startup, monitoring, and winterizationComplete small construction projects including fencing, concrete work, trail improvements, signage installation, and park amenities (benches, tables, etc.)Assist with carpentry, basic plumbing, and light electrical tasks related to park infrastructureOperate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, and light to medium equipmentAssist with park improvement projects, renovations, and special projects as assignedMaintain clean, safe, and organized work sitesFollow all City safety policies and procedures; identify and report hazardsWork collaboratively with other Parks staff and City departmentsProvide support to general parks maintenance operations as needed
Job QualificationsRequired Education Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferredExperience in irrigation, construction, landscaping, or related field preferredValid Colorado driver's license (or ability to obtain)Ability to pass a background check and/or drug screening if required by City policy
Other Necessary Requirements:
The applicant should possess a current, legal driver's license and have minimal driving infractions. (Parks positions are subject to a background check)
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic knowledge of irrigation systems and components preferredBasic knowledge around construction techniques and materialsAbility to safely operate tools and equipmentStrong problem-solving and troubleshooting skillsAbility to read and follow basic plans, diagrams, and instructionsAbility to work independently and manage time effectivelyStrong attention to detail and commitment to quality workAbility to work outdoors in varying weather conditionsAbility to communicate effectively with supervisors and team membersEnglish Language Comprehension - Requires the ability to listen to, read, understand and communicate the English language so that others are able to understand. This must be done both orally and in writing, at the level appropriate for the position held.
Working ConditionsWork Environment:
Primarily outdoor work in parks and public spacesExposure to dust, noise, weather extremes, and equipment hazardsMay require early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekend work depending on project needs.
Physical Activities:
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionallyAbility to perform manual labor including digging, lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periodsAbility to work outdoors in various weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, and precipitation
Tools and Equipment Used:
The following tools and equipment are necessary for this position. All of these things will be provided by the Parks Department.

Hand tools (shovels, rakes, wrenches, hammers, etc.)Power tools (drills, saws, compactors, etc.)Irrigation-specific tools and equipment (pipe cutters, valve keys, wire tracers, controllers)Light and medium equipment (utility vehicles, skid steer, small excavators, trenchers, mowers)Concrete and carpentry toolsPersonal protective equipment (PPE)

Works under the general supervision of the Parks Foreman
