Job Description Recreation Assistant -
Grounds Maintenance Job Status:
Full-Time, Non-Exempt Pay Range:
Starting from $20.00 per hour, based on knowledge, skills, abilities, and prior experience.
Schedule:
Typically, 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday. This position requires availability for nights, weekends, and holidays as needed, and may include overtime work.

The role involves hands-on maintenance duties, public interaction, and communication with department leadership. This position reports to the Parks and Recreation Director or their designee and plays a key role in ensuring a safe and well-maintained environment for both staff and the public. Specific Duties and Responsibilities The following is a representative list of the essential functions and duties of this position. This list is not exhaustive, and management reserves the right to assign additional duties as needed.
Park & Facility Maintenance:
Perform maintenance and upkeep of City parks and facilities. Assist with the day-to-day cleanliness of the public swimming pool and enforce pool policies and regulations as needed. Maintain day-to-day cleanliness and perform trash removal for all park facilities. Assess areas in need of maintenance and advise the Parks & Recreation Director on needs for replacement and/or repair.
Administrative & Communication:
Communicate with the Parks and Recreation Director regularly about the condition of park equipment and facilities. Fulfill individual goals and measurable objectives developed with the Parks and Recreation Director. Create and maintain various forms of communication with city personnel as needed. Respond to and relay citizen ideas, complaints, and needs to the Parks & Recreation Director for consideration.
Professional Conduct & Safety:
Foster a safe environment for both departmental staff and the public. Follow the direction provided in the Parks and Recreation Mission Statement. Cooperate with other City departments and staff. Wear proper attire at all times. Maintain a professional relationship with the public and set an example in conduct for the entire staff. Report to work as scheduled. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
A high school diploma is preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of one year of maintenance experience is preferred.
Certifications & Licenses:
Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License in good standing.
Screening:
Must voluntarily submit to and pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.
Relocation:
Must be able to relocate to Freeport, FL 32439, before the start of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Technical & Maintenance Skills:
Knowledge of City Park & Recreation maintenance and repair requirements. Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, irrigation, and lawn maintenance. Ability to operate a variety of machinery. Aptitude for office procedures, cash management, and basic mechanics.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to comprehend and express ideas verbally and in writing. Ability to work with the public and maintain professional relationships. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Mental & Cognitive Skills:
Ability to understand and help formulate department rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines. Must be able to concentrate, memorize, and reason logically. Ability to respond effectively to emergencies, changes, and directives.
Safety:
Ability to recognize and avoid safety hazards and respond to emergencies effectively. Ability to recognize and protect confidential information. Physical Requirements and Work Environment This position requires a high degree of physical fitness and the ability to work in various environmental conditions. The employee must have the strength and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including body flexibility and multi-limb coordination. Adequate depth perception, visual acuity, visual stamina, and auditory perception are required. The employee must be able to speak and write clearly. This role requires the ability to tolerate high temperatures and may involve working in confining workspaces.
