Job Description

A Landscaper is responsible for designing, installing, and maintaining outdoor spaces for residential, commercial, and public properties. They work with plants, turf, hardscapes, irrigation, and soil to create attractive, functional, and sustainable environments. Landscapers interpret client needs and landscape plans, prepare sites, install plantings and structures, and perform ongoing maintenance such as mowing, pruning, fertilization, and pest management. On a typical day a landscaper operates hand and power tools (mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, compact loaders), mixes soils and amendments, lays sod or seed, installs irrigation and drainage systems, builds patios, retaining walls, and pathways, and applies fertilizers and authorized pesticides. Work is physically demanding and performed outdoors in all seasons, requiring lifting, bending, and standing for long periods. Landscapers must follow safety protocols, maintain equipment, manage materials, and keep accurate records of work completed and recommendations. Successful landscapers combine practical horticultural knowledge with an eye for design, strong time-management, and good customer communication. Advancement can lead to supervisory roles, landscape design, or specialty certifications in irrigation, pesticide application, or hardscape construction. Employers expect reliability, professionalism when interacting with clients, and a commitment to sustainable practices such as water-wise planting, integrated pest management, and proper soil care.
