Job Description

Restful Roots LLC is seeking a seasonal, full time, horticulturist/gardener We specialize in fine gardening rather than lawn care, with a focus on native plants, ecological horticulture, and long-term plant health. We value education, attention to detail, and craftsmanship, and are looking for someone who enjoys learning and takes pride in creating beautiful, ecologically responsible gardens. The job is Monday-Thursday, 8-9.5 hour days (32-38 hours). Friday is our alternate work day if there is cancellation due to inclement weather or if there is a Monday holiday, so Friday availability is a must. You can work more hours if you'd like when work is available, including overtime. We meet each morning at the shop at 8:00, and arrive back at shop between 4:00-5:30. Shop is located off Brighton Ave in Portland, ME. Drive time to and from jobs is on the clock. Lunch is a half hour at noon, paid. We often work in remote locations without takeout lunch accessible, bringing your own lunch is preferred and often necessary. Though we are mid season now, we start the first week of April and go until at least Thanksgiving, possibly into December depending on work availability. The job is primarily garden installation, garden maintenance, and invasive control and the labor is often difficult.
Job duties include:
Raking Cutting back Border edging Mulching Weeding Pruning Fertilizing Sod stripping Digging/planting Invasive removal Driving work trucks (valid drivers license required) All tools are supplied, appropriate work attire required Benefits, Growth & Career Path at Restful Roots Available to full time employees. Winter Stability:
off-season income Additional $3/hr for installation work Leadership opportunities review Increased PTO Bonuses upon installation project completion Qualifications Valid driver's license with a clean driving record Reliable transportation to and from the shop Ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail Willingness to learn and accept feedback Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions Ability to safely operate hand tools and small power equipment (or willingness to learn) Preferred (not required) Professional gardening, landscaping, nursery, or horticulture experience Working knowledge of ornamental plants, including the ability to identify common trees, shrubs, perennials, and weeds Degree or certificate in horticulture, landscape design, environmental studies, or a related field Experience with native plants and ecological horticulture Pruning experience Knowledge of invasive plant identification and management Experience installing gardens from plans Experience operating trailers or driving work trucks Physical requirements: Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly Work in heat, rain, cold, insects, uneven terrain Kneeling, squatting, bending, repetitive motions Pay is $22-$28/hr depending on experience and education.
