The incumbent in this position is responsible for the overall appearance and maintenance of the grounds at the Hastings Veterans Home, as well as assisting Plant Maintenance and trades employees in construction and maintenance projects. Will also assist with transportations services for our Veterans. The Minnesota Veterans Home in Hastings is a Domiciliary (DOM) which is an independent living community for Veterans. It provides a supportive environment that fosters a stable, healthy, and meaningful life for Veterans. Our rewarding program helps Veterans with their clinical, mental, chemical, and physical needs, and has the capacity to serve 195 Veterans between the Hastings and Minneapolis campuses. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these qualifications will be considered for this position. Minimum Qualifications Valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License. Groundskeeping experience such as mowing and edging, trimming trees/plants, planting flowers, weeding and snow removal. Operate groundskeeping equipment such as commercial riding mower, chainsaws, string trimmers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, snowplows, salt spreaders. Knowledge of auto mechanics sufficient to perform routine maintenance tasks such as checking tire pressure, checking fluid levels, lubrication and cleaning of vehicle. Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and/or Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross or ability to obtain at time of hire. Ability to obtain a Noncommercial Pesticide Applicator license within the probationary period. Communicate with others and understand information. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with Veterans and/or vulnerable adults. Experience with troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance on groundskeeping equipment: small engines, utility vehicles, riding mowers, chainsaws, string trimmers, leaf blowers, power tools, snow blowers, snowplows, hopper & tailgate salt spreaders. Experience with chemical fertilizer and pesticide applications and related safety practices. Knowledge of horticulture techniques (planting schedules, germination intervals, and transplantation procedures) sufficient to maintain and improve facility grounds/landscaping and recognize and/or treat plant diseases and pests.
