Underground Storage Tank Specialist - ( 26141210 ) Make a Difference for Montana's Environment and Communities Are you looking for a career where your work directly contributes to protecting human health and Montana's natural environment? Join a team of dedicated environmental professionals committed to safeguarding the state's land, water, and communities. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking an Environmental Science Underground Storage Tank (UST) Specialist to support our mission of preventing releases of petroleum products and hazardous substances from underground storage tank systems statewide. This position is part of the Tanks, Brownfields & Federal Facilities (TBFF) Bureau within the Waste Management & Remediation Division . Position Overview The Environmental Science UST Specialist plays a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance and protecting environmental quality.

Core responsibilities include:
- Reviewing compliance inspections and conducting State UST oversight inspections
- Carrying out enforcement actions and facility follow‑up tasks using program tools such as Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) and Enforcement Requests
- Conducting Environmental Assessments (EAs)
- Issuing UST construction and operating permits in accordance with Montana regulations and industry standards
- Delivering licensee training, stakeholder outreach, and compliance assistance
- Educating facility owners and operators on UST system requirements and best practices for operation, maintenance, and recordkeeping
- Providing on‑site technical assistance and operator training materials to support long‑term compliance This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working both independently and collaboratively, engaging directly with the regulated community, and applying technical and regulatory knowledge to protect Montana's environment.

Detailed Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in education, environmental health, the biological or physical sciences or engineering, especially geology, hydrogeology, environmental engineering or environmental sciences or a closely related field.
- Two years of job-related experience.
- Current valid Driver's License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy.
- Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training is required upon hire and Medical Surveillance Program recommended enrollment is recommended.
