Job Description
Caldwell University invites applications for a full-time Grounds/Landscape Worker within the Facilities department. The Grounds/Landscape Worker plays a vital role in maintaining the safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the Caldwell University campus. Operating under the direct supervision of the Lead Groundskeeper, who reports directly to the Director of Facilities, this position carries out daily work assignments for the specialized maintenance of university grounds, non-cultivated areas, and athletic fields. The ideal candidate ensures all outdoor spaces and playing surfaces meet institutional standards and athletic league specifications while executing tasks safely, efficiently, and collaboratively. Job duties include, but are not limited to: Executes daily work schedules and assignments for landscaping and grounds maintenance as directed by the Lead Groundskeeper; receives clear instructions and ensures all tasks are completed efficiently and to university standards. Assists the Lead Groundskeeper in monitoring and reviewing the work of external contractors and third-party vendors providing specialized grounds, landscaping, or tree care services to ensure compliance with university quality and safety standards. Collaborates closely with various internal and external stakeholders—including athletic department staff, campus event coordinators, and administrative leadership—under the guidance of the Lead Groundskeeper to support university programming, accommodate scheduling needs, and align operational goals. Maintains the condition of both natural and artificial turf across all athletic fields, including specialized infield maintenance. Paints turf with team logos, striping, and names prior to sporting events (e.g., baseball, softball, soccer, football) strictly adhering to league specifications. Implements fertilization, aeration, watering schedules, and customized pesticide solutions to optimize turf health. Keeps playing surfaces clean, visually appealing, and structurally safe for student-athletes. Prepares soil, seeds, rolls, weeds, feeds, and cuts university lawns. Performs planting, transplanting, thinning, and harvesting of flowers for cutting, campus displays, and events. Cares for and maintains non-cultivated areas of the grounds to ensure they are properly kept and orderly. Removes dirt, rubbish, snow, leaves, and other refuse across all campus properties. Maintains the ongoing cleanliness, utility, and repair of campus roads, lawns, sheds, benches, and parking areas. Safely operates a wide variety of landscaping and grounds equipment, including but not limited to: trucks, tractors, skid steers, backhoes, grass cutters, plows, snowplows, sweepers, blowers, salt spreaders, seeders, spreaders, cultivators, sprinklers, spraying devices, and manual tools (scythes, hoes, rakes, spades, shears, garden hoses). Strict adherence to all safety procedures and measures to ensure personal safety, as well as the protection of colleagues, students, and visitors during ground operations. Operates, oversees, and trains staff on a wide variety of landscaping and grounds equipment, including but not limited to: trucks, tractors, skid steers, backhoes, grass cutters, plows, snowplows, sweepers, blowers, salt spreaders, seeders, spreaders, cultivators, sprinklers, spraying devices, and manual tools (scythes, hoes, rakes, spades, shears, garden hoses). Responds to inclement weather emergency operations; directs staff and assists with the physical removal of snow and/or directs the operation of snow blowers, plows, and salt spreaders. Performs assigned duties within university buildings for short periods based on immediate institutional or departmental needs. High School Diploma and 2 to 5 years of professional grounds maintenance or landscaping experience. This must include practical work involving large-scale grounds operations, gardening, tree surgery, or tree care operations. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey to perform the essential duties of the position. Appointees may be required to obtain a New Jersey Certified Pesticide Applicator's or Operator's Permit in the required categories.
Will be required to learn to utilize and navigate various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related departmental units.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor in various weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, snow, and rain).Availability to respond to after-hours emergencies, including weather-related call-ins (snow and storm cleanup) and weekend athletic events. This role frequently requires physically demanding tasks like lifting, carrying, and moving heavy items. The specific weight requirements can vary and may include lifting or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting or moving of up to 75 pounds or even 100 pounds. For weights exceeding those typically lifted manually, expect to utilize proper equipment (jacks, hoists, cranes, etc.) and potentially assistance from other workers. Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, and reaching. Demands dexterity and fine motor control for tool manipulation and detailed work. Involves working in various environments, including confined spaces, noisy areas, and potentially outdoors under differing weather conditions.
