Job Description
Nature of Work This is responsible manual and semiskilled work involving the maintenance of the city owned property and related structures and equipment taken care of by the City of Pigeon Forge Parks and Recreation Department. Activities associated with the job include assisting with the preventive maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of facilities and playgrounds, machines and equipment. Additional activities include installing, repairing and maintaining irrigation systems, light carpentry, masonry, and assisting with the maintenance and cleaning of shelters and grounds. Job responsibilities require experience working for a landscaping company, experience performing light maintenance activities, ability to consistently follow daily instructions, ability to interact effectively with the public and sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. Job performance is evaluated by the Park Maintenance Superintendent through review of the level of support provided for operations and activities in the City of Pigeon Forge, ability to consistently follow daily instructions and established policies and procedures, skill in operating mowing and grounds maintenance equipment and performing light maintenance activities and ability to interact successfully with co-workers and the public. Illustrative Examples of Work Mows athletic facilities, grounds and common areas according to seasonal demands. Fertilizes and aerates tees, fairways and greens and sprays greens with herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. Weed eats around fences, trees, shrubbery flower beds etc. to enhance the appearance of common areas. Plants trees, shrubbery and flowers around buildings, shelters and common areas according to seasonal needs. Waters annual flowers as needed. Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems. Assists with grounds improvement, lays sod and repairs walking trails and other facilities. Assists with performing routine preventive maintenance practices and minor repairs on lawn equipment and machinery. Assists with the maintenance and cleaning of shelters and grounds. Interacts with the public in a courteous and professional manner and remains cognizant of their location when performing grounds maintenance activities. Maintains park facilities and city properties. Assists with loading and unloading materials, equipment and supplies needed by Parks & Recreation. Notifies the appropriate personnel of any needed repairs on equipment and machinery or in park facilities. Performs related duties as required. Necessary Requirements of Work Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program; experience performing lawn maintenance and/or landscaping duties; some experience performing light building maintenance activities; ability to consistently follow directions and established policies and procedures; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions; good interpersonal and organizational skills; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills: Knowledge of the safe operation of machinery and equipment utilized for lawn maintenance and landscaping activities including commercial mowers, weed eaters, tractors, edging equipment, etc. Knowledge of the proper use and application of pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers and grass seed. Knowledge of the safety precautions and recommended first aide practices associated with frequently utilized chemicals including Safety Data Sheet information. Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. Ability to consistently follow all daily instructions and established policies and procedures. Ability to interact effectively with co-workers and the public. Ability to safely operate all machinery and equipment utilized on the job and follow existing safety precautions. Skill in the use of power equipment and machinery utilized on the job including mowers, weed eaters, tractors, edging equipment, fertilizer, pesticide and insecticide sprayers, etc. Necessary Special Requirements Possession of a valid Tennessee Drivers license and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates. Physical Requirements This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects Work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, grasping and repetitive motions Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels Visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards and atmospheric conditions.
