Job Description

Operates various types of heavy equipment engaged in the construction, repair, or maintenance of county roads and bridges; operates recycler; conducts routine maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment; transports materials to and from work sites; and directs traffic at construction sites as needed.
  • Demonstrates equipment operation techniques to Equipment Operators
  • Assists with patching, tamping, packing, and leveling dirt, asphalt, or other materials during pothole repair, reconstruction of road shoulders, and crack sealing.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment such as motor grader, wheel loader, dozer asphalt distributor, roller, water truck, recycler, mowers, shredders, rotary broom, chip spreader, rough carpenter, vibrating and steel wheel rollers, backhoe, fencing erector, road sweeper, concrete finisher, and other equipment used in the construction and repair of county roads at an advanced level.
  • Complete required paperwork, forms and records as required and in a timely manner.
  • Assist with prepare work zones and perform traffic control. Flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead.
  • Perform routine inspection checking oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulic system, etc., and makes appropriate adjustments to ensure vehicles are in proper condition prior to operating.
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects/repairs to supervisor.
  • Drives tractor-trailer truck for hauling materials to construction or repair sites (if a CDL holders).
  • Performs welding duties, including welding parts together and repairing broken or cracked parts.
  • Operates front-end loader or track loader to load/unload materials and equipment.
  • Performs work with hand tools, including digging trenches, filling excavations, mixing concrete, cutting down trees and brush, removing driftwood and debris from culverts, clearing of brush, and cleaning of drainage ditches.
  • Replaces and repairs signs and signposts, including welding and cutting signs and metals as needed
  • Works independently to complete assigned task/duties and may lead the work of other equipment operators.
  • Perform other work as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
High school graduation or its equivalent, plus at least nine years of experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Prefer CDL driver's license with endorsements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Safe operation of the equipment used and of the provision of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to such motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools & diverse equipment used in various work tasks. Ability to apply the correct method to job situations.
  • Ability to learn the operation of new equipment and/or processes.
  • Ability to obtain any required certifications.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbally and written instructions.
  • Ability to complete work projects on time and in an effective manner.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers; ability to identify and communicate issues and/or solutions to supervisor.
  • Tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Maintain Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities and good driving record.
  • Maintain and use personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Ability to maintain attendance and punctuality.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently bend, stoop, squat, lie down, and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing from 20 pounds up to 100 pounds, such as tools and equipment. The employee must be able to operate powerful equipment which also causes vibrations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
