POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the supervision of the ecological reserves project manager, the ecological reserves crew supervisor III is responsible for working directly with tribal partners to implement land stewardship and improvement activities on tribal lands, the BCCER, and within the surrounding community. The crew supervisor III is expected to work independently with minimal day-to-day oversight from the project manager, particularly when coordinating with external partners. This position is also responsible for a variety of administrative functions, including scheduling, tracking, and reporting.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
At the discretion of the project manager, responsibilities include:
Programmatic Elements:
Conduct vegetation management activities on the BCCER and within the surrounding community in ecologically sensitive areas using a variety of tools and equipment. Serve as the primary point of contact for project sponsors and ensure clear communication regarding contract expectations, safety requirements, and accountability measures. Design and implement projects on the reserve and for contracted work. Supervise employees, interns, and volunteers. Develop and deliver crew training programs. Ensure crew safety and project regulatory compliance. Oversee project completion through effective tracking and reporting. Assist with the planning and implementation of prescribed burns. Schedule Land Steward I and Land Steward II assignments and track project outcomes. Assist with grant administration and project tracking. Perform other duties as assigned by the project manager.
Maintenance Elements:
Responsible for ensuring proper tool maintenance for contract and project work. Conduct shop inventory, maintain organization, and develop operational protocols. Perform field work, including but not limited to invasive plan eradication, fence repair, road and trail maintenance, using a variety of hand and power tools. Assist in facilities maintenance and minor repairs. Perform other duties as assigned by the project manager.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Qualifications:
Experience performing duties similar to those described above. Experience working with Native American communities. Knowledge of California Indian Tribes and California Indian cultural resources. An understanding of and commitment to Indigenous priorities. An understanding of conservation of natural and open space resources Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of constituents, including volunteers, student staff and interns, reserves visitors, faculty, and staff. Experience supervising others. Experience implementing and ensuring safety compliance. Strong time management skills and the ability to work independently. Completion of Wildland Fire Chainsaw Training (S-212). Familiarity with a variety of hand and power tools, including chainsaws, brush cutters, and small equipment. Basic Firefighter II certification or equivalent. Knowledge of native and non-native plant species.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental science, or a related field. Basic knowledge and understanding of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Advanced chainsaw operation and tree-felling certifications or equivalent experience. Experience operating machinery.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to perform both sedentary and physical labor. Capacity and willingness to work in extreme weather conditions. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must be in possession of valid driver's license and automobile liability insurance. Participation in the DMV Employer Pull Notice Program (driving record) is required. The candidate will be required to update their insurance with Chico State Enterprises Human Resources when necessary.
