Job Description

Job Overview The City of Wayland is seeking a qualified DPW Equipment Operator who will support the City Services Unit and the Utilities Unit, depending on the needs of the organization. This position is responsible for performing a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled tasks involving the operation of light and heavy equipment, maintaining and repairing public infrastructure, maintenance of streets, parks, stormwater systems, water and wastewater utilities, and other municipal facilities. Work is performed under general supervision with a focus on safety, efficiency, and responsiveness to public needs, including during emergencies Duties
  • Operate and maintain light and heavy equipment, vehicles, and power tools used in public works operations.
  • Perform street, utility, and infrastructure maintenance, including repairs, snow removal, and emergency response.
  • Maintain parks, grounds, recreation areas, and public facilities, including pesticide application and event support.
  • Conduct building and facility maintenance, including custodial work, basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting tasks.
  • Assist with the operation, maintenance, and repair of water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.
  • Perform routine vehicle and equipment inspections, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs.
  • Support emergency operations through traffic control, utility coordination, and incident response.
  • Provide professional customer service, respond to public inquiries, and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Support departmental operations, seasonal activities, and community events as assigned. Skills
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with air brakes endorsement (or registered for certification within 6 months).
  • Currently holds S2/D2 drinking water licenses, L2 wastewater license, or has the ability and/or desire to obtain the licenses through State exams.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Applicator's License.
  • Knowledge of municipal infrastructure systems, equipment operation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Understanding work zone safety, traffic control, and MiOSHA regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, maps, schematics, and work orders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work and respond to emergencies.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and capable of working independently or as part of a team.
Pay:
$24.46 - $28.17 per hour
