Job Description

The City of Raleigh is seeking an enthusiastic Park Operator to perform a variety of tasks including operations, natural resource management, and excellent customer service. Park Operators are considered Essential Staff who perform daily operations tasks and support outdoor recreation programs. Duties will include supervising the park in the absence of full-time staff. Lake Wheeler Park contains approximately 800 acres of waterway and park land. The park provides access to water activities, boat ramps, fishing, hiking trails, picnic shelters, and comfort stations. There are multiple types of facility rentals offered at the park. Successful candidates will have the ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities to provide quality public service. Open and close the park facilities daily. Perform safety patrols via boat vessel, truck, powered utility vehicle. Educate visitors of park policies and services. Maintenance of park trash receptacles, cleaning of park comfort stations and facilities. Operate Rectrac software to process monetary transactions for services of the park. Provide excellent customer service to park patrons in person and phone. Lead or Assist with Outdoor Recreation program offerings to include fishing, paddling, nature education, and more.
Knowledge and Skills :
Understanding of outdoor environments and willingness to work in those environments. Understand the value of outdoor recreation for members of the community. Operate a Personal Utility Vehicle, Park Truck and ability to use park tools to perform park maintenance. Customer support in multiple situations including introduction to site amenities, interpretation of rules, and program offerings.
Abilities :
Able to manage multiple tasks and projects successfully. Able to solve problems and perform conflict resolution resulting in positive outcomes. Perform administrative tasks using various software and point of sale systems Candidates for this position must be at least 18 years of age. A candidate should possess excellent verbal and written skills. Applicants with interests and/or experience in outdoor recreation, including wilderness skills, hiking, fishing or team-building facilitation are encouraged to apply. This position requires the candidate to be able to lift at least 30lbs and walk at least one mile over rough terrain. Successful candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a City of Raleigh Driver's Permit. Additional Information This is a 15-20-hr a week position with weekend, holiday, and evening hours required. Park hours vary throughout the year and are based on sunrise to sunset calendar. Schedule will vary due to park projects, programs, and operation needs.

Positions in this class typically require balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motion, and seeing.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Visual Acuity:
The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
Working Conditions:
Tasks are carried out in both indoor and outdoor environments. Maybe exposed to extreme heat above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour and may have to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
