Job Description

Employee in this position is responsible for maintaining, repairing and improving parks in Island County. Perform landscape maintenance on parks grounds, to include mowing, trimming, pruning, fertilization, irrigation and pest control. Conduct sanitation rounds of parks and boat ramps, public docks; maintain boat ramps, tennis courts and athletic fields. Perform general and preventative maintenance and repair work on parks infrastructure; to include buildings, athletic fields, and grounds. Maintain and repair irrigation and water systems. Perform other tasks as directed. Valid Washington State Drivers License. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of turf equipment, to include diesel tractors and related implements, diesel and 4 cycle mowers and 2 cycle equipment. Ability to work in a safe manner, quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in events, remain calm in stressful situations, relate to the public in a calm, professional manner. Effectively communicates with others for purposes of gathering and relating information. Understands the need for maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information particularly while supervising Island County inmates. Independent and self-motivated to complete required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of athletic fields, restrooms, irrigation systems, pest control, repair and preventative maintenance, including minor plumbing, electrical and carpentry repair. Ability to supervise seasonal employees and volunteers. Ability to work outside in adverse weather conditions. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. High school diploma or equivalent. Associate Degree in Parks and Recreation or Landscape Horticulture preferred. Prior experience and/or training in Parks and Recreation Landscape Horticulture, or similar work. Ability to successfully complete various required training classes and to obtain certificates in Pest Control and Playground Safety. Valid Washington State Driver's License.
