MOSQUITO COLLECTION/CONTROL TECHNICIAN

This position is a temporary role and works on a as needed basis. Shift times can vary between all evenings of the week. During peak season (May-October) hours are between 30-40 per week. Hours are most often during the evening/night - 7:00PM to midnight but can vary.

1 Mosquito Collection Tech, 2 Mosquito Control Techs Hourly pay is $18.00-$21.00 depending on qualifications and experience.

MOSQUITO COLLECTION TECHNICIAN

(1 opening) Distinguishing Features of the

Class:

Under general supervision, performs field sampling of mosquito and mosquito larvae in Polk County. This is a seasonal assignment 30-40 hours per week typically from mid-May through mid-October.

Illustrative Examples of Work:

Prepare mosquito traps for collection five days per week. Identify locations for placement of traps. Deliver samples to ISU five days per week. Performs related duties as may be required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of mosquito eradication and control methods. Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery used in mosquito spraying. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to read maps and follow manual directions. Ability to lift objects weighing 30 pounds. Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, sometimes in rough terrain or adverse conditions. Ability to work independently. Ability to follow verbal and written directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the public. Ability to record accurate data.

Training and Experience:

Graduation from high school. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must possess a valid Iowa driver's license.

MOSQUITO CONTROL TECHNICIAN

(2 Openings) Distinguishing Features of the

Class:

Under general supervision, applies insecticides according to state and local regulations to lessen the number of mosquitoes and mosquito larvae in Polk County.

Illustrative Examples of Work:

Applies insecticides according to state and local regulations, policies and procedures. Prepares and tests spray equipment to ensure it is working properly; performs routine maintenance on vehicle used for spraying; cleans and services spray equipment at the end of each day. Keeps a daily record of areas sprayed in log book. Monitors supply of insecticides and communicates need for additional supplies. Performs related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of mosquito eradication and control methods. Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery used in mosquito spraying. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to read maps and follow manual directions. Ability to record data. Ability to lift objects weighing 30 pounds. Ability to work independently. Ability to follow verbal directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the public. Ability to obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Iowa. Ability to become a certified insecticide/pesticide handler as required by the State of Iowa.

Training and Experience:

Graduation from high school, and Six months related experience, or Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
