Job Description:
The IPM Manager / Plant Health Technician is responsible for managing and controlling all aspects of the nursery's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. This dynamic position involves monitoring, identifying, and treating pest and disease issues using appropriate cultural, biological, and chemical control methods. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and experienced in applying and managing insecticide, fungicide, and herbicide treatments within a nursery setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee and execute the nursery's IPM program across all divisions (Retail, Wholesale Yard, and Growing Operations). Apply insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides to plants and trees using proper timing and techniques. Identify pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies in woody ornamentals, perennials, and field/container-grown plants. Select, mix, and apply appropriate chemicals safely and efficiently. Maintain accurate and up-to-date application records in compliance with state and federal regulations. Monitor pest populations and recommend cultural or biological controls when appropriate. Inspect equipment (air blast sprayers, tank sprayers on tractors/trucks) and ensure proper calibration and maintenance. Train and supervise seasonal or support staff as needed in safe pesticide handling and application. Follow all safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Report directly to the Operations Manager or General Manager on pest management progress and results.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years of experience in nursery pesticide application or IPM management. Strong working knowledge of insecticide, fungicide, and herbicide products and application practices. Familiarity with woody ornamentals, perennials, and nursery crops. Certified Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire). Excellent recordkeeping and organizational skills. Commitment to safety and environmental compliance. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.
