Heart of Texas Electric Cooperative (HOTEC) is a member‑owned, not‑for‑profit electric utility serving rural Central Texas since its incorporation in 1937. OVERVIEW
This is a full-time, on-site role located in McGregor, Texas. The Equipment Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of heavy and specialized equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of electric distribution systems. This role supports line crews and other field personnel by transporting materials, setting poles, trenching, clearing right-of-ways, and ensuring equipment is in safe, working condition. The Equipment Operator plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient execution of field operations. This includes not only handling equipment such as digger derricks, bucket trucks, backhoes, and trenchers, but also assisting crews with job site preparation, safety compliance, and routine labor tasks as needed.ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES
Equipment Operation, Maintenance & Repair:
Operates and maintains motorized equipment such as hydraulic boom, digger derrick, trencher, backhoe, and underground locating equipment. Ensures equipment is in safe working condition, reports any issues to the supervisor, and performs minor repairs; relies on the shop mechanic for major repairs.Underground Cable Location & Groundwork:
Locates existing underground cables and performs pole hauling, framing, setting, and other groundwork duties as needed.Inventory & Tool Management :
Maintains and organizes tools and material inventory on the assigned vehicle, ensuring proper placement and upkeep of both the vehicle and equipment.Safety & Hazard Reporting:
Reports hazardous conditions such as downed power lines or energized conductors, practices good housekeeping on the job site, and complies with safety regulations, including NESC, OSHA, DOT, and EPA standards.Communication & Documentation:
Operates radio communication equipment and accurately completes necessary paperwork, including daily vehicle inspections and hours worked, ensuring timely reporting.Training & Policy Compliance:
Participates in required training and safety meetings, adhering to all Cooperative policies, procedures, and safety rules.Physical Fitness and Job Readiness:
Must possess the physical fitness necessary to perform manual labor, lift heavy equipment, and work in demanding outdoor environments. Must be able to maintain a level of health and body weight that supports safe performance of essential duties.QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). 2+ years' experience in utility-related construction and/or training: or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Previous experience as an Utility Equipment Operator or Line Technician highly desirable. Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License preferredJob Type:
