Job Description

JOB The Metro Nashville Public Health Department (MPHD) seeks a dynamic and experienced Field Supervisor to provide leadership within our Metro Animal Care and Control program. This position is a first-line supervisor, responsible for the effective supervision and administration of the employees who operate the shelter's Animal Control services.
Responsibilities include:
staff supervision - prioritizing and assigning work and related activities; budgeting and financial transactions, report/record-keeping, employee relations and performance management. Because this supervisory position is required to occasionally step in to fill the shift of a front-line employee, many of the duties align with those required of an Animal Control Officer 1. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Enforces animal control laws and ordinances by issuing citations, documenting evidence, communicating with other law enforcement and prosecuting attorneys, and testifying in court when appropriate.

Responds to requests for assistance with wildlife and vicious animals, requests for assistance and investigation of allegations of animal cruelty.

Apprehends, subdues, and impounds stray, unlicensed, and other animals, including vicious, feral, and sick animals.

Rescues injured and ill animals, transports animals to shelter veterinarians when appropriate, performs field euthanasia (by chemical injection) when necessary; and removes and disposes of dead animals.

Investigates animal bites and coordinates handling and quarantine of animals for examination.

Prepares and reviews investigative reports, daily log sheets, legal documents, and other reports as required. Uses the data to practice quality improvement, data analysis, program planning and evaluation.

Establishes and implement s departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures in a fair and impartial manner.

Develops and recommends policies and procedures; recommends internal organization; establishes and implements management systems to effectively meet operating goals and objectives.

Maintains staffing of field-related positions by evaluating the need to fill vacant positions, recommending changes in position allocation, and ensuring proper training and certification of MPHD's Animal Control personnel.

Works with Shelter Manager, Animal Control Officers, and other shelter staff to support adoption and outreach efforts.

Prepares regular progress reports and communicates with internal and external stakeholders about animal control related safety and health issues as needed for visibility and success of the program. Takes initiative to identify and solve problems.

May provide training and coordinate special projects as needed.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science, Biology, or a related field.

Must have and be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic animal care standards, including safe animal handling procedures for domestic and wild animals.

Must have and be able to demonstrate knowledge of proper use, secure storage, and disposal of lethal chemicals, syringes and related equipment.
