Job Description

Animal Care Assistant Job Description The Animal Care Assistant provides daily care and husbandry for larger preclinical animals, including swine, canine, and ovine, in a laboratory environment. This role supports animal health and welfare, maintains a clean and compliant facility, and assists veterinary staff while following strict quality and safety standards. Responsibilities Provide daily care and husbandry for larger preclinical animals, including swine, canine, and ovine. Build quality into all aspects of work by maintaining compliance with all applicable quality systems and procedures. Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and consistently observe safety practices. Perform daily maintenance of animal health and husbandry, including monitoring animals and reporting concerns. Clean all animal housing areas on a daily basis to ensure a sanitary environment. Provide daily enrichment to animals, including exercise, toys, and social housing where appropriate. Disinfect each housing area weekly, including walls, flooring, and feed bins. Feed all animals according to department SOPs and established schedules. Maintain cleanliness and organization in all laboratory and animal care areas. Receive department deliveries and ensure proper handling and storage of supplies. Communicate all animal health status issues immediately to veterinary staff. Document all activities in animal records and forms daily using Good Documentation Practices. Assist Veterinary Technicians and Veterinarians with procedures and tasks as assigned by the Manager. Communicate any facility maintenance needs or issues to the Manager in a timely manner. Lift and move items up to 30 pounds as required for animal care and facility maintenance. Essential Skills Comfort working directly with animals, including swine, canine, and ovine. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds as part of daily duties. Understanding of or strong interest in animal husbandry and animal handling. Ability to follow detailed SOPs and adhere to safety practices consistently. Capability to maintain cleanliness and organization in animal housing and laboratory areas. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation using Good Documentation Practices. Ability to communicate clearly and promptly with veterinary staff and management about animal health and facility issues. High school diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience in a laboratory, animal husbandry, or animal care setting is a plus. Industry experience in a regulated or quality-focused environment is beneficial. Comfort working within established quality systems and procedures. Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) is not required but related training or coursework is advantageous. Work Environment This is an onsite role in a preclinical laboratory and animal care facility. The position involves direct, hands-on work with larger animals such as swine, canine, and ovine in housing and lab areas that require regular cleaning, disinfection, and adherence to safety and quality standards. The schedule follows day hours, typically 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a 4-5-day work week that includes required Saturday and Sunday shifts; the final schedule is discussed during the interview. Scrubs and work shoes are provided, including a shoe voucher to purchase appropriate footwear. The environment requires wearing scrubs and suitable shoes, working around animal enclosures, cleaning and sterilization equipment, and following all SOPs to maintain a safe, organized, and compliant facility. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Arden Hills, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
