Accounts Payable Manager Construction Industry Location:
Laytonsville, MD (Onsite) Our client , a leading organization in the construction industry, is seeking an experienced Accounts Payable Manager to lead and optimize their Accounts Payable (A/P) function. This individual will oversee the full A/P lifecycle, drive process improvements, lead a high?performing team, and serve as a key partner across the business. About the Role The Accounts Payable Manager will be responsible for ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of all A/P transactions, overseeing a team of A/P Specialists, and leading initiatives to streamline and modernize the Procure?to?Pay workflow. This is a highly visible role that requires strong leadership, customer?service orientation, and a passion for process improvement. Key Responsibilities Team Leadership Lead and develop an A/P team of 4-5 specialists. Conduct performance reviews, set goals, and promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Customer Service Serve as the primary point of contact for A/P inquiries from internal branches, corporate staff, external vendors, and leadership. Ensure timely, complete, and clear communication. Manage issue resolution by identifying root causes, coordinating solutions, and minimizing operational impact. Accounts Payable Operations Oversee the day?to?day processing of 6,500+ invoices per month. Maintain strong internal controls, including vendor statement reconciliations and A/P aging reviews. Manage vendor master data, including approvals of vendor set?ups. Monitor controls throughout the A/P workflow, and report KPIs to leadership. Detect and resolve discrepancies, errors, and vendor disputes. Manage and maintain vendor holds. Accounting & Reporting Lead the month?end close process for Accounts Payable. Ensure accuracy of the A/P subledger and reconciliation to the General Ledger. Oversee invoice accounting across the organization's maintenance, installation, and corporate functions. Continuous Improvement & Systems Identify inefficiencies and redesign workflows to reduce cycle times and errors. Lead implementation of new A/P automation and Procure?to?
Pay tools. Support broader finance transformation initiatives. Cross?
Functional Collaboration Partner closely with Accounts Receivable, Financial Accounting, and other departments. Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and internal policies. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration. 6+ years of experience as an Accounts Payable Manager. Proven track record managing high?volume A/P operations and leading teams. Experience in large?scale or private?equity?backed organizations. Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls. Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, macros). Strong analytical, problem?solving, and communication skills. Preferred Experience with JD Edwards, Spreadsheet Server, and ticketing/project management software (e.g., Jira, Zendesk). Experience leading process or systems transformation initiatives.
