The Opportunity The Project Architect is responsible for leading the planning, design, documentation, and execution of multifamily, mixed-use, retail, and transit-oriented development projects from concept through construction. This role serves as both the technical and organizational leader for assigned projects, managing consultants, coordinating project teams, and ensuring design intent, quality, schedule, and budget are maintained throughout every phase of a project. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring excellent technical ability, sound judgment, clear communication, and the ability to mentor staff while delivering complex projects in a collaborative, design-focused environment. The successful candidate will regularly interact with ownership, consultants, municipalities, contractors, and project stakeholders while providing leadership in technical discussions and helping guide project decisions. Key Responsibilities Project Leadership & Design Execution Lead multifamily, mixed-use, retail, urban infill, and transit-oriented development projects through every phase, including: Site Planning, Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents, Permitting, Construction Administration Translate design concepts into technically sound, efficient, and buildable solutions while maintaining the original design intent. Prepare architectural drawings, diagrams, presentation materials, and project documentation that clearly communicate design vision. Serve as the primary architectural point of contact for consultants and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams. Lead technical discussions with ownership, the development team, municipalities, consultants, and general contractors throughout all phases of design and construction. Guide project teams through design decisions, technical challenges, permitting requirements, and project milestones. Participate in design reviews, technical reviews, and QA/QC processes while maintaining firm standards for quality and consistency. Technical Leadership & Documentation Lead the production and coordination of construction documents using Revit and/or AutoCAD. Ensure drawings and specifications are complete, coordinated, technically accurate, and code compliant. Maintain organized BIM models, project documentation, and drawing standards. Oversee project workflows and maintain quality throughout the documentation process. Perform document review, consultant coordination, and quality control. Resolve technical issues while balancing design quality, constructability, project budgets, and schedules. A significant portion of our work consists of podium-style multifamily construction, typically incorporating one- and two-story concrete podiums supporting four to six stories of wood-frame residential construction. Candidates should have strong experience with these building types. Experience with stand-alone retail buildings, mixed-use developments, concrete construction, and wood-frame multifamily construction is highly preferred. Project Management & Coordination Coordinate structural, MEP, civil, landscape, lighting, and specialty consultants throughout project delivery. Support project scheduling, staffing, and resource planning in coordination with leadership. Monitor project progress to maintain schedules, budgets, and project deliverables. Coordinate and resolve code-related issues with Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Assist with project financial management, including fee awareness, scope management, and efficient project delivery. Lead construction administration activities, including: RFIs Submittals Shop drawing reviews Site observations Field reports Punch lists Coordination with contractors and consultants Help resolve field conditions while protecting design intent and project quality. Team Leadership & Mentorship Provide clear direction, mentorship, and technical guidance to design staff. Review delegated work for quality, coordination, and completeness. Foster a collaborative, accountable, and respectful team environment. Support the firm's culture of professional growth, technical excellence, and shared responsibility. Assist in developing internal management procedures, technical standards, documentation standards, and quality control processes. Qualifications We're looking for a technically strong architect who enjoys leading teams, solving challenges, and delivering exceptional mixed-use, multifamily, and transit-oriented projects.
Qualifications include:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture or a related field. Approximately 4-15 years of professional architectural experience. Demonstrated experience leading multifamily, mixed-use, retail, and urban development projects through all phases. Strong experience with podium-style multifamily construction (concrete podium with wood-frame residential above). Experience with stand-alone retail buildings. Demonstrated success coordinating consultants and leading multidisciplinary project teams. Strong knowledge of construction documentation, detailing, building systems, and constructability. Thorough understanding of applicable building codes, zoning, accessibility, and permitting processes. Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional quality and attention to detail. Architectural licensure is preferred but not required for outstanding candidates.
