Grade 19 $35.08 - $42.66 per hour The Carpenter position is with the County of Norfolk Government in the Maintenance Department; it is a union position. Position Summary The Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of county buildings, facilities, and related structures. Work includes both rough and finish carpentry, furniture repair, and other assigned maintenance tasks to ensure that County buildings are safe, functional, and well maintained. Responsibilities Construct, install, and repair wooden structures, furniture, flooring, doors, windows, cabinets, and other fixtures in county buildings. Perform routine maintenance on buildings, including repairing partitions, stairways, roofs, and related structures. Repairs and replaces door handles, knobs and locks, maintains accurate key management scheme for all county owned buildings. Assists with lockouts and re-keying as needed. Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and other carpentry equipment safely and effectively. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work orders to determine project requirements. Estimate materials, supplies, and time needed for assigned projects. Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and project status. Collaborate with other trades (plumbing, electrical, painting, custodial) as needed on larger projects. Ensure compliance with building codes, safety standards, and county regulations. On Call 24/7 Perform related duties as required. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a recognized apprenticeship program preferred. At least 3-5 years of carpentry experience, preferably in building maintenance or municipal/facility settings. Knowledge of practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the carpentry trade. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and building specifications. Familiarity with applicable safety codes and occupational hazards. Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 100 lbs.) and work in varying conditions (heights, outdoors, confined spaces). Valid unrestricted Massachusetts driver's license. Construction Supervisor's License required. Work Environment Work performed both indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions. Exposure to dust, noise, and construction hazards is common. Requires use of protective equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and hearing protection. Union/Classification Position is part of the AFSCME, Council 93, Local 2417. Grade and step placement per collective bargaining agreement. Reporting Structure/Supervision Works under the supervision of the Facilities Director, Deputy Facilities Director, or their designee. Physical:
Regular periods of physical activity requiring the ability to stand for extended periods, walk, climb, bend, crawl, and lift, carry, and position objects. Ability to lift/move items weighing up to 70 pounds frequently, up to 100 pounds occasionally. The ability to make a swift and responsible decision in an emergency or hazardous situation.
