Norfolk, VA Position Summary:
The Marine Carpenter / Fabricator is responsible for constructing, installing, repairing, and fabricating shipboard and drydock structures, primarily using wood and composite materials, to support ship operations and protect equipment. This role requires the ability to interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications, and to independently complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. Key Responsibilities:
Fabricate, install, and repair structures including Nomex/false deck panels, drop ceilings, synthetic well decks, batter boards, array covers, and ship windows in accordance with project specifications. Outfitting drydocks with docking blocks and supporting ship installation or maintenance activities. Interpret and work from drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer handbooks, change orders, and contract specifications. Operate and maintain Carpenter Shop equipment, portable power tools, and hand tools. Layout, cut, and fabricate products from blueprints, sketches, and owner specifications. Use U.S. standard and metric measurements accurately; perform basic arithmetic for fabrication and installation tasks. Provide quality work and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required by supervisors or project specifications. Carry out verbal, written, and diagram-based instructions while addressing unexpected events professionally. Complete daily work assignments, including documentation of completion and quality verification. Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas; comply with OSHA and shipyard safety standards. Communicate hazardous conditions to supervisors and co-workers. Qualifications & Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED); vocational school training preferred. Minimum six (6) years of relevant experience in marine carpentry, fabrication, or related trade. Skilled in at least one of the following: deck panel fabrication, drop ceiling installation, well deck installation, window installation, array cover fabrication, or drydock blocking. Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications. Proficient in operating hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) for reporting, Condition Found Reports (CFRs), and coordination. Must comply with all OSHA, safety, and PPE requirements. Work Environment:
Work may occur indoors, outdoors, and aboard ships or drydocks under varying weather conditions. Exposure to confined spaces, high platforms, scaffolding, ladders, and manlifts. Noise levels may range from low to high depending on location. PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, respirators, and fall protection is mandatory. Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift/push/pull 50-100 lbs occasionally and up to 20 lbs frequently. Prolonged standing, bending, squatting, crawling, kneeling, and climbing. Work at heights above 12 feet using ladders, scaffolds, or manlifts. Ability to access confined spaces and maneuver in tight areas (18" x 36"). Sufficient hand grip, coordination, and dexterity to operate tools and equipment. Good balance and mobility on uneven surfaces.
Strong background in trim carpentry, framing carpentry, cabinetry installation, door hanging, and remodeling projects Knowledge of heavy lifting techniques and safety procedures for working on large vessels or structures Experience with water damage restoration industry standards and mold remediation processes Ability to perform masonry work including bricklaying or tile laying as required for specific projects Familiarity with roofing systems such as metal roofing or shingles; siding installation skills preferred Skilled in fabrication techniques including metalworking or woodworking for custom parts Electrical experience including wiring or schematics reading is a plus Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to complex project requirements in a marine environment This position offers an exciting opportunity for experienced carpenters with a passion for marine construction.
