Foreperson Structural General Description:
The Carpenter is responsible for performing skilled carpentry work related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of school buildings, facilities, and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Constructs, installs, and repairs structural woodwork and equipment working from blueprints, drawings, or verbal instructions, conforming to local building codes. Builds, repairs, and installs counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, building framework, and trim, using carpenter hand and power tools. Installs glass in windows, doors, and partitions. Replaces damaged ceiling tiles, floor tile, and wall coverings. Performs general carpentry work in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, screens, windows, and scaffolding. Forms wood fixtures and repairs furniture, tables, chairs, and benches. Builds concrete forms and replaces wooden window sashes. Sands and finishes floors. Performs skilled bench work in a carpentry shop operating power saws, jigsaws, wood lathes, plans, sanders, and mortising machines. Cleans, sharpens, and repairs hand and bench tools. Makes estimates of time and materials required for the task and keeps simple records. Supervises and instructs helpers and apprentices. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Licenses/Certifications:
Must hold a Virginia motor vehicle operator's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Additional Requirements:
A performance test may be required to demonstrate the required skill level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, practices, and safety precautions of the carpentry trade. Working knowledge and skills in making simple estimates of time and materials, inspecting lumber, and working from sketches, plans, and written instructions. Considerable knowledge of carpentry work, local building/construction codes, policies, guidelines, and procedures. Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and required safety precautions, and the ability to interpret and work from instructions, guidelines, regulations, and policies. Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and machinery required in carpentry work and in working from sketches, blueprints, and diagrams. Ability to work in a cooperative manner with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and school/department administration and staff.
Physical Demands:
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise handle materials, tools, and equipment. Work involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching with hands and arms. The employee regularly uses hands and fingers to handle, operate, and control hand and power tools, and to measure, cut, and assemble materials. Visual acuity is required to read blueprints and drawings, operate machinery safely, and perform detailed carpentry work with precision. The position requires auditory ability to hear instructions, alarms, and environmental sounds at construction or maintenance sites.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, including workshops, school buildings, and construction or repair sites throughout the district. The position involves regular exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and varying weather conditions, as well as potential contact with hazardous materials or equipment associated with carpentry and construction work. Tasks may require working at heights, in confined spaces, or in awkward positions. Work is physically demanding and may involve deadlines or emergency repair situations. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, and hard hats must be used as required.
