SALARY:
Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Scale, Pay Grade F3 commensurate with experience and education level.
EVALUATION
Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the building immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and KCS's Guide to Performance Evaluation for Service Personnel.
JOB SUMMARY
To perform carpentry craftwork and repair related to new construction and renovation relating to maintaining all facilities of Kanawha County Schools.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Additional duties may be assigned. Constructs and repairs structural woodwork and equipment in schools, working from blueprints, drawings, or oral instructions Builds, repairs, and installs counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, building framework, and trim, using carpenter's hand tools and power tools. Installs glass in windows, doors, and partitions. Installs and/or replaces damaged ceiling tile, floor tile, and wall coverings. Builds cabinets and other wooden equipment in carpenter shop, using woodworking machines, such as saws, shaper, and jointer. Install items, such as window shades, venetian blinds, and curtain rods, wall fans, and door locks for schools. Performs renovation and remodeling of an existing facility, such as removing walls, putting in doorways or windows. Performs general repair work to maintain facilities, the construction of buildings primarily wood or masonry construction (as required when such construction is not contracted). Maintains records of time, materials and costs of work projects. May indirectly supervise of other crafts and maintenance men on construction projects. Maintains regular attendance. Maintain a working relationship with co-workers and building principals in completing work orders and in resolving conflicts between school being in session and the work to be done. Attends in-services and workshops as directed. Follows all safety rules and regulations and uses prescribed personal protective equipment. Maintains confidentiality. Continuously improves processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c; Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test) as required. Must be in an apprenticeship program in carpentry and preferably 3 to 5 years' experience in the carpenter crafts. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Carpenter II means personnel employed to perform all carpentry craftwork related to new construction and renovation in order to repair and maintain all facilities of Kanawha County Schools, to insure safety and to keep them attractive. Means personnel classified as a journeyman carpenter. (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8). Ability to use of all hand tools of the carpentry craft plus the power tools such as saws, drills, mortise machines, routers and electric planes. Ability to read and work from plans, drawings and blueprints as appropaite to the trade..

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see, climb a ladder a minimum of six feet and use repetitive motions. While performing the duties of this job the employee may frequently lift and or move up to 70 pounds of materials. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The temperature in the work environment can range from below freezing when working outdoors to in excess of 90°F when working in the furnace room or kitchen areas or on roof tops. The work surface can be slippery when mopping/stripping floors or completing snow removal.
