GED Full Job Description Job Summary:
The Civil Construction Finisher is responsible for the finishing of concrete surfaces and other final touches on civil construction projects, including roads, bridges, sidewalks, curbs, and other infrastructure. The Finisher ensures that the surfaces are smooth, aligned, and meet all project specifications and standards. This role requires attention to detail, expertise in handling concrete, and ensuring high-quality craftsmanship in the final stages of the construction process.Key Responsibilities:
Concrete Surface Finishing:
Finish and smooth concrete surfaces to the required specifications using tools like trowels, floats, and power tools (e.g., power screeds, grinders, etc.). Apply finishes to concrete, such as broom finishes, trowel finishes, and exposed aggregate finishes, based on the project requirements. Ensure that all concrete surfaces are level, smooth, and free from defects such as bubbles, cracks, or imperfections.Form Removal and Concrete Curing:
Assist with the removal of forms after concrete has been poured and has set. Ensure that concrete is properly cured by applying curing compounds, wetting surfaces, or covering with curing blankets to promote optimal hydration and strength development.Alignment and Smoothing:
Use tools such as screeds, leveling boards, and straightedges to ensure that concrete slabs, curbs, or sidewalks are level and properly aligned. Ensure that the concrete is compacted and free from air pockets, voids, or inconsistencies.Detailing and Adjustments:
Make adjustments to the concrete surfaces, including filling in low spots, smoothing out rough areas, or cutting joints to prevent cracks. Install control joints, expansion joints, or decorative joints where necessary, ensuring proper placement and functionality.Surface Cleaning and Protection:
Clean and prepare surfaces before applying finishing treatments or protective coatings. Protect completed work from weather conditions, ensuring that it is not exposed to rain, extreme heat, or freezing conditions that could affect the finish quality.Safety & Compliance:
Follow all safety regulations and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others on the construction site. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, helmets, and safety glasses. Comply with OSHA standards and local construction safety regulations to avoid accidents or injuries.Qualifications:
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required. Completion of an apprenticeship or on-the-job training in concrete finishing is preferred.Experience:
2+ years of experience in concrete finishing or a related field, with a focus on civil construction projects such as roads, bridges, or utilities.Certifications:
OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification (or equivalent) is recommended. First Aid/CPR certification is a plus.Skills:
Proficiency in using concrete finishing tools and equipment, including trowels, floats, grinders, and power screeds. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and project specifications. Strong understanding of concrete mixing, pouring, and curing processes. Knowledge of various concrete finishes and techniques, including broom finishes, exposed aggregate, and polished concrete. Strong attention to detail, with an eye for quality craftsmanship and precision.Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, standing, and kneeling for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 50 lbs or more). Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, rain, and cold.
