Full Job Description Core Job Responsibilities & Duties:
1. Operating heavy machinery (e.g., skip loaders, skid steers, pavers) and performing physical road maintenance tasks. 2.
Crew Supervision & Task Delegation:
Directing daily field operations for a crew of 4 to 1O laborers and/or equipment operators. This includes assigning tasks, training apprentices, and keeping workers on schedule. 3.
Jobsite Safety & Compliance:
Enforcing strict Cal/OSHA regulations and union safety policies. Responsible for running mandatory daily "tailgate" safety meetings, verifying correct work zone traffic control layouts, and reporting any safety violations. 4.
Blueprints & Grade Reading:
Interpreting engineering plans, highway blueprints, and construction documents to accurately establish grading, paving depths, and utility layouts. 5.
Administrative Tracking:
Maintaining daily logs of hours worked (processing union timecards), tracking material inventory (asphalt, concrete, gravel), and reporting project updates to the Site Superintendent. 6.
Public and Utility Coordination:
Acting as the on-site point of contact for utility companies, city inspectors, and addressing traffic-related public inquiries safely. 7.
Requirements & Qualifications Union Membership:
Active, good-standing membership in Operating Engineers Local 3. 8.
Experience:
Minimum of 3 to 5 years of hands-on heavy highway, asphalt paving, or road maintenance experience as a union journeyman. 9.
Licenses:
A valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record is required. A Commercial Class A or B CDL is highly preferred for moving trucks and heavy equipment. 10.
Certifications:
Active Cal/OSHA 30-hour construction safety certification, First Aid/CPR.
Pay:
From $65.43 per hour
