Job Description

Open/Promotional Recruitment Tentative Examination Date:
The City of Stockton is currently recruiting for the position of Senior Electrician. There is one (1) vacancy in the Public Works Department. The Senior Electrician plans, organizes, and assigns the work of crew members, and leads and directs crews engaged in the installation, repair, maintenance, and modification of a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment. This includes work on motors, transformers, switchboards, generators, and other electrical infrastructure. Within the Public Works Department, assignments include maintenance and repair of street lighting systems as well as interior and field electrical wiring. The incumbent ensures work is performed safely and in compliance with applicable regulations, including enforcing Cal/OSHA safety orders , lock-out/tag-out procedures, and
NFPA 70E
arc flash safety standards .
Work Schedule:
The position works a 9/80 schedule: Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., and Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., with alternating Fridays off. Why Join the City of Stockton? As a Senior Electrician, you will play an important role in ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical systems that support the daily operations of the community. These lists may be used to fill future vacancies. Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system and are in a "for-cause" employment status represented by the Trades and Maintenance bargaining unit. Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation. Under general supervision, assigns, directs and reviews the work of staff engaged in electrical installation and maintenance work; performs highly skilled electrical installation, repair, maintenance and modification work; performs related work as assigned. This is the lead level in this series. This class is distinguished from Electrical Supervisor, Plant Maintenance Supervisor and Water Operations Supervisor, which are at the first-line supervisory level. Plans, organizes and assigns the work of crew members; leads and directs crews engaged in the installation, repair, maintenance and modification of a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment. In public works, assignments include street lights and inside and field wiring; in plant maintenance, assignments include pump controls, power switch gears, consoles, engine controls, variable speed drives and pneumatic controls, alarm systems, lighting and related systems; in water maintenance, assignments include all electrical, electronic and instrumentation within the system. Personally performs the most skilled duties; provides technical assistance to crew members; instructs crew in work procedure and safe work practices, troubleshoots equipment problems. Estimates and secures tools, material and equipment required for assigned jobs; discusses work to be performed with supervisors; assigns tasks to individuals at the work site. Monitors work in progress at the worksite; directs corrections and modifications as appropriate; evaluates job performance. Maintains written and computerized records of work performed and materials used; records as-built drawings of modifications; prepares a variety of written records and reports related to the work. Reads and interprets plans, schematics, blueprints, manuals and specifications; designs modification as necessary. Directs the use and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools, test equipment and other equipment related to the work operates trucks and equipment. Observes safe work methods and ensures the use of safety equipment and precautions related to the work being performed; conducts tailgate safety meetings; assists in developing training programs. Coordinates work assignments with other divisions; responds to questions and requests as appropriate. Inspects contract work to ensure compliance with specifications; recommends corrective action as necessary. Education Possession of a high school diploma or GED; and Experience Two (2) years of journey level experience in electrical work at a level equivalent to the City's class of Electrician II. Other Requirements Must possess a valid California driver's license. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 95 pounds. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be willing to work from aerial buckets and underground in confined places and with possible exposure to potentially hazardous substances. Must be willing to work overtime and off hours shifts in emergency situations. Must possess good color vision.
Knowledge of :
Basic supervisory principles and practices; Principles, techniques, tools, and materials used in the electrical trade; Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power and shop tools, test equipment, and other equipment common to electrical and electronic work; Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work; Codes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to the work; AC/DC theory and control circuits; Basic electronics principles and theory; Computer applications related to the work; Electrical mathematics. Skill in : Assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of others; Training others in work procedures; Operating and maintaining a variety of hand, power and shop tools, and equipment used in electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work; Understanding and following oral and written instructions; Properly placing cones, barricades, and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites; Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision; Reading and interpreting schematics, blueprints, plans, and specifications; Preparing basic records; Estimating materials and equipment necessary to complete assigned jobs;
The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best meet the needs of the City , will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may include an oral or unassembled examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
