Job Description

Position Description The Underground Foreman is responsible for leading and managing underground construction crews to ensure all projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to Universal Services' quality standards. This position requires the ability to locate for directional drills, supervise multiple team members, and coordinate daily operations. The Foreman acts as the key field leader, ensuring all utilities are properly identified and work is completed with precision, safety, and professionalism. !! $2000 Sign-On Bonus !! Perform accurate and consistent locating for directional drills to ensure safe and compliant bore paths. Coordinate work plans, materials, and schedules with Project Managers and Coordinators. Conduct pre-job inspections and confirm all utilities are located and potholed prior to work. Ensure proper job site setup and teardown, including all traffic control and safety measures. Oversee crew performance, safety compliance, and job quality throughout each project. Operate drilling or locating equipment as needed to maintain production goals. Complete and submit daily reports, production logs, as-builts, and safety documentation. Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, inspectors, and internal stakeholders. Identify and report vehicle and equipment maintenance needs to Fleet Services. Maintain professional job site appearance and ensure crews uphold Universal's standards. Coach, mentor, and evaluate crew members to promote growth and skill development. Required Qualifications & Experience Minimum of 3 years of experience in underground telecommunications or utility construction. Minimum of 2 years of proven leadership or supervisory experience. Strong experience locating for directional drilling operations (required). Valid driver's license; CDL preferred. Ability to read and interpret construction prints, permits, and job plans. In-depth knowledge of safe work practices, utility locating, and underground installation processes. Preferred Experience Experience operating both Ditch Witch and Vermeer directional drills. Strong communication and leadership skills across diverse field teams. Proficient in troubleshooting field issues and coordinating multiple crews. Knowledge of bore tracking, locating systems, and restoration processes. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and digital reporting tools. Physical Demands & Competencies Ability to lift and carry up to 60 lbs. regularly. Frequent bending, standing, kneeling, and walking over uneven terrain. Must be able to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions. Demonstrates strong leadership, organization, and problem-solving abilities. Maintains composure and clear communication under pressure and changing conditions. Work Environment This position operates outdoors year-round in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow. Work sites involve exposure to moving equipment, live utilities, and traffic. Proper PPE, situational awareness, and adherence to all Universal Services safety standards are mandatory. Work Schedule This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Typical schedule is Monday-Friday, with flexibility required for evenings, weekends, and overtime as dictated by workload, weather, or project timelines. Regular and punctual attendance is an essential function of this role.
Training & Development Expectations New Hire Development:
Complete Universal Services' Foreman onboarding and leadership modules within the first 90 days. Demonstrate proficiency in drill locating, safety leadership, and field reporting procedures. Develop a full understanding of project coordination and crew management.
Ongoing Development:
Participate in Universal's continued leadership and CLD (Career & Leadership Development) programs. Mentor crew members and support their progression into advanced roles. Contribute to ongoing improvements in safety, production efficiency, and job quality.
