You will operate heavy equipment, work in trenches and confined spaces, and support pipe repair and installation work while maintaining strict safety standards and delivering professional service to customers. Responsibilities Prioritize safety at all times by strictly adhering to OSHA regulations and all company safety protocols. Perform residential and commercial excavation work for sewer, water, and related plumbing line repairs and replacements. Carry out pipe repairs and new pipe installations following excavation, ensuring work meets quality and code requirements. Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, mini-excavators, skid steers, and other excavation machinery equipped with scoops, shovels, or buckets to excavate and load loose materials. Excavate trenches and ditches to required depths and dimensions for piping and utility installations. Work safely and efficiently in confined spaces and open trenches, following all safety procedures for trenching and shoring. Drive, operate, and care for a service vehicle, ensuring safe travel between job sites and timely arrival to each location. Locate job sites accurately within the assigned service area and arrive on time for scheduled work. Complete assigned jobs within specified timelines while maintaining high standards of workmanship. Interact professionally with customers as needed, answering basic questions and representing the company in a courteous and respectful manner. Support trenchless water, sewer, and gas operations when required, including preparation, setup, and cleanup of job sites. Assist with general construction and mechanical tasks related to excavation, plumbing, and piping work as directed. Maintain a clean and organized work area, including tools, equipment, and vehicles, and report any equipment issues promptly. Essential Skills Hands-on experience in excavation projects within residential and commercial construction environments. Proficiency working in excavation environments, including confined spaces and trench operations, with a focus on efficiency and safety. Ability to operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, mini-excavators, skid steers, and other excavation machinery. Strong understanding of trenching, ditches, and safe excavation practices. Experience supporting plumbing-related work, including piping, sewer, and water line installations or repairs. Valid driver's license and a safe driving record. Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days if required for the vehicle driven. Ability to complete jobs within specified timelines while maintaining quality standards. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, to meet operational needs. Physical ability to perform general labor, including lifting, digging, working in varying weather conditions, and performing tasks in confined spaces and open trenches. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with trenchless water, sewer, and gas systems is a strong plus. Experience in construction or plumbing environments, including familiarity with mechanical and general labor tasks. Experience operating dozers or other heavy construction equipment. Operator certifications for heavy equipment are beneficial. Exposure to piping systems, trench work, and utility installation. Work Environment This position is field-based across the East Bay area, including locations from the Oakland/Berkeley corridor down to Fremont, the Tri-Valley region up to Benicia, and as far east as the Tracy area. Typical hours are approximately 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with an on-call rotation approximately every ten weekends. You will work outdoors in varying weather conditions, frequently in open trenches, ditches, and confined spaces. The role involves regular use of heavy equipment such as backhoes, mini-excavators, skid steers, and dozers, as well as hand tools and mechanical equipment related to excavation, trenching, and plumbing. The environment is physically demanding and safety-focused, with a strong emphasis on OSHA compliance, proper use of personal protective equipment, and adherence to all safety procedures on active construction and utility sites.
