Apprentice Water Operator / General Laborer

JOB SUMMARY

The Apprentice Water Operator oversees the operation of the water treatment plant in order to provide quality and safe water to the Town of Argos. This position operates a variety of equipment to repair, maintain and replace water facilities and systems. This position is part of a structure apprenticeship program designed to provide hands-on training and technical instruction in the operation and maintenance of municipal water treatment and distribution systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Assist in the operation and maintenance of water treatment and distribution facilities
• Perform routine inspections, sampling, and testing of water systems
• Maintain accurate records and logs in compliance with regulatory requirements
• Assist with repairs of water mains, hydrants, valves and service lines
• Learn and follow all safety procedures and regulatory standards
• Participate in on-the-job training and related classroom instruction
• Be available for emergency callouts and rotating on-call schedules
• Assists other utility departments as needed
• Follows all guidelines, policies, procedures and/or programs as outlined in employee handbooks, ordinances, policy guides, etc.
• Performs other duties and/or special projects as assigned

• Ability to interact with the public and address their concerns/questions in a professional manner
• Ability to think logically and problem-solve in order to analyze situations, troubleshoot, and make sound decisions
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
• Knowledge of and ability to follow safety precautions and wear protective gear necessary to avoid potential harm to self and others
• Ability to operate machinery such as, but not limited to, bucket trucks, electrical tools, backhoe, Vactor and other equipment related to the town
• Ability to travel overnight (approximately two to five times per year)

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or GED required
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Valid driver's license required (CDL preferred or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
• Ability to obtain Indiana Water Operator Certification within required timeframe
• Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding takes
• Must pass background check and drug screening

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

• Employee must reside within a 20-mile radius of Argos within 6 month of hire and maintain residence as a condition of employment

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

:

• Enrollment in a registered apprenticeship program. Completion of required classroom (Related Technical Instruction)hours
• Completion of on-the-job training hours as outline by the program.
• Demonstrated progress toward licensure and skill competency.

• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to incremental weather conditions.
• Ability to walk long distances across varied terrain, climbing, bending, stooping, reaching, and carrying equipment.
• Ability to perform focused work with close attention to detail.
• Ability to push, lift, carry, pull, and move up to 100 pounds.

Pay:

$18.00 - $22.00 per hour
