Full Job Description SUMMARY:
The person in this position works as a crew to maintain, repair, and replace rails, ties, switches, and ballast. This position uses hand tools and operates heavy equipment. The position starts as a track maintainer, with an opportunity to qualify as a machine operator.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a traveling position 100% of the time. Schedules are two or three weeks on the project then one week at home. Maintain a safety conscious work ethic. Repair and rebuild railroad track & bridge structures using hydraulic or hand tools. Remove and replace ties and rails; pull and drive spikes; shovel rock ballast; load and unload equipment and material. Use various types of tools and equipment, including tampers, regulators, backhoes, torches, hammers, jacks, and other mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools. Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot problems on equipment. Be familiar with federal and state regulations as they relate to the railroad industry. Ability to update rules and manuals to assure continuous compliance with all railroad regulations. Adhere to and promote safe work practices.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Must be able and have a willingness to work safe. Ability to complete written forms and reports, including FRA reports, as required. Understand and respond to audible and visual signals and warnings. Working knowledge of and familiarity with equipment such as tampers, regulators, torches, hammers, jacks, and other mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations. Excellent oral and written communication skills, willingness to take direction. Experience with heavy hand tools, and previous work in an outside environment preferred. Must pass Federal background check. Ability to comply with FRA 219 drug program. Possess and demonstrate knowledge of FRA 213 rules and regulations.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS
Must be 18 years or older. Valid Driver's License. Must be authorized to work in the United States. Able to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance regularly. Ability to work in all weather conditions and on all terrain, from early morning hours until late afternoon. Essential physical requirements, such climbing, standing, bending, twisting, and lifting. Exposures encountered, such as hazardous materials, loud noise, extreme heat/cold. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including on-call, nights, weekends, and holidays. The ability to travel to various job sites, including those that require overnight stays and those that require short notice mobilization.
PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED
High school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience a plus CDL Previous experience in railroad or other heavy construction or maintenance industry.
