Competitive Pay/Prevailing Wage Health Insurance Civil Excavation Laborer - Job Description Position Overview A Civil Excavation Laborer supports excavation, site preparation, and utility installation activities on construction projects. This role involves physically demanding work, assisting equipment operators, maintaining safe job sites, and performing general labor tasks essential to completing civil construction and excavation operations. Key Responsibilities Site Preparation & Excavation Support Assist with trenching, grading, and backfilling operations. Hand-dig around utilities when required. Set grade stakes, help measure elevations, and support layout tasks. Prepare work areas by clearing debris, materials, and obstacles. Utility Installation Help install water, sewer, storm drain, and other underground utilities. Place and compact bedding material. Assist in pipe laying, alignment, and backfill operations. Safety & Compliance Follow all company and OSHA safety procedures. Use proper PPE and maintain a clean, hazard-free work site. Communicate clearly with operators, spotters, and crew members. Report any unsafe conditions or incidents immediately. General Labor Tasks Shovel, rake, and move materials such as dirt, gravel, and rock. Operate basic tools such as compactors, plate tampers, and saws. Assist with loading/unloading materials and equipment. Support operators by acting as a spotter when needed. Qualifications Required Prior experience as a laborer in construction, excavation, or related work. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions. Strong understanding of safety practices around heavy equipment and trenches. Ability to use hand tools and basic construction equipment. Preferred Experience with underground utilities or civil site work. CDL or experience hauling equipment (optional). OSHA 10 certification. Ability to read grades or experience with lasers/levels. Soft Skills Strong work ethic and reliability. Team-oriented mindset and good communication. Willingness to learn and follow direction. Attention to detail and situational awareness. Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50-75 lbs regularly. Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, and work on uneven ground. Ability to work long hours outdoors, including in heat, cold, and rain. Typical Work Environment Outdoor civil construction sites. Fast-paced and physically demanding. Work around heavy machinery, dirt, dust, and noise.
