Job Description

CONSTRUCTION WORKER A MINIMUM OF CLASS B DRIVER'S LICENSE IS REQUIRED . DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This class encompasses position involved with the performance of manual tasks in the construction of various projects such as bridges, roads, water and sewer appurtenances, or buildings. Duties are performed under direct or general supervision, depending on the nature of the tasks completed. A Construction Worker does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Digs, spreads, and levels dirt and gravel using pick and shovel; Lifts, carries, and holds building materials, tools, and supplies; Cleans tools, materials, and equipment; Mixes, pours, and spreads concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials using hand tools; Acts as a helper to skilled or semi-skilled workers; Lays, joins, wraps, and seals sections of pipe; Places culvert sections in trench; Removes forms from set concrete; Fills expansion joints with asphalt; May be required to operate a snowplow, clearing and sanding roads during the winter season; May operate mowing equipment such as push mowers. lawn tractors, etc.; May operate specialized heavy equipment; May be assigned to operate street sweeper; May be required to trim trees, bushes and perform other grounds keeping activities; May apply pesticides/larvicides for plant and insect control, if qualified; Performs a variety of routine manual tasks.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions associated with construction projects and material handling; ability to use hand and power tools; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work in a safe and efficient manner; manual dexterity; willingness to work outdoors year-round; physical condition sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One year of experience as a laborer involving either the construction of bridges, roads, water and sewers appurtenances, buildings, or related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid New York State Drivers license appropriate to the vehicles operated at the time of appointment.
