About Us Houtman Construction has been building custom homes and handling remodels in Brookings South Dakota since 1981. We're family-owned, based in Brookings. Most of our work runs within an hour of town. We build the kind of homes the owners stay in for thirty years. We're hiring a Construction Laborer to work alongside our crew on residential job sites. Position Summary This is an entry-level spot on a small residential crew. No prior experience required — we train on the jobsite. You'll work under the jobsite foreman and learn the trade by doing it. Framing one week, siding the next, interior finish work after that. The work is outdoor, physical, and hands-on. You'll come home dirty most days. That's the work. If you're looking for an indoor desk job, this isn't it. If you want to learn how houses actually get built, from the foundation up, this is a good place to do it. What You'll Do
- Help the crew with framing, siding, soffit and fascia, windows and doors, and interior finish work
- Move and stage materials on site
- Load and unload deliveries
- Operate basic hand and power tools under the foreman's direction
- Keep the jobsite clean, organized, and safe throughout the day
- Show up on time, ready to work, every day
- Take direction from the foreman and learn the trade by doing
- Clock in and out through the QuickBooks Workforce app on your phone
What We're Looking For Required:
- Valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle to get to job sites
- Able to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly, climb ladders, work at heights, work in crawl spaces, and stand on your feet outdoors all day in all weather
- Show up on time, every day
- Willing to learn and take direction from the foreman
- Smartphone you can run the QuickBooks Workforce app on Nice to have:
- Prior framing, siding, or finish carpentry experience
- Your own basic hand tools (tape, hammer, speed square, utility knife) — we provide power tools and consumables Compensation & Benefits
- $17-$23/hr depending on experience
- Hourly with overtime paid after 40 hours per week at time-and-a-half
- Paid weekly

- Workers comp coverage (Class 5645 — residential carpentry)
- Steady year-round work — we don't lay off in winter Schedule & Location
- Monday through
Thursday:
7:30 AM to 5:30 PMFriday:
7:30 AM to 3:00 PM- Summer schedule: 7:00 AM start; Friday wraps at noon
- Most weeks run 40 to 45 hours; OT after 40 is paid at time-and-a-half
- Jobsites are within roughly one hour of Brookings, SD
- You drive your own vehicle to jobsites within 15 miles.
