Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Public Works Laborer performs a variety of manual labor and skilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and installation of the City's public infrastructure, including water distribution, sewer collection, stormwater systems, and streets. This position requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions and involves physically demanding tasks to ensure the proper functioning and safety of public utilities and roadways.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Water System Maintenance Install, repair, and maintain water mains, service lines, valves, and fire hydrants. Conduct water meter installations, readings, and maintenance. Assist in monitoring water pressure and quality control to ensure compliance with regulations. Perform troubleshooting and repairs on pump stations, reservoirs, and pressure regulating valves. Operate and monitor the SCADA system for effective water distribution management. Sewer & Stormwater System Maintenance Maintain and repair sewer collection lines, manholes, and lift stations. Inspect and clear blockages in sewer and storm drain systems using appropriate equipment. Clean and maintain stormwater infrastructure, including drains, inlets, and retention ponds. Assist in sewer line inspections and leak detection using specialized tools. Street Maintenance & Repair Perform pothole patching, crack sealing, and other asphalt/concrete repairs. Maintain curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and storm drainage systems. Removing snow from city roadways using snowplows and other equipment to ensure safe road conditions during winter months; periodic 24-hour availability. Set up and maintain traffic control devices and safety barriers at work sites. Conduct street sweeping and debris removal as needed. General Duties Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, including backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, and compactors. Follow proper safety procedures and participate in safety training. Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used. Assist other departments as needed with public works-related tasks. Periodic assistance with burials; including weekends
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent. Experience in public works, water distribution, sewer maintenance, or street maintenance preferred. Certifications & Licenses Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months. Water Distribution and/or Sewer Collection Certification preferred or ability to obtain. Traffic control certification preferred or willingness to obtain. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Basic knowledge of water, sewer, stormwater, and street maintenance techniques. Ability to use and maintain hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Ability to follow safety procedures and work effectively in a team environment. Willingness to work in varying weather conditions and respond to emergency callouts. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, and hazardous materials. Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds. Frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing in confined spaces. Availability for on-call duty, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
