Full Job Description Position Summary:
The Assistant Construction Manager supports the planning, coordination, and execution of power and utility infrastructure projects, including overhead and underground electric distribution, transmission, substation, and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) work. This role serves as a key link between field operations and project management, assisting with day-to-day construction activities to ensure projects are executed safely, on schedule, within scope, and in compliance with customer and regulatory requirements. Power Contracting performs work utilizing journeyman linemen, apprentices, operators, and underground crews in partnership with utility-owner customers. The Assistant Construction Manager works closely with field leadership and project teams to coordinate manpower, materials, schedules, safety documentation, and customer reporting while gaining progressive responsibility and exposure across major underground, civil, electrical, and design-build/EPC delivery models. This position is ideal for developing construction professionals seeking hands-on responsibility within the electric utility and power construction industry.
Essential Functions:
Support Construction Managers and Project Managers on electric utility construction and EPC projects, including distribution, transmission, substation, and major underground scopes. Assist in coordinating daily field operations with linemen crews, underground crews, field supervisors, subcontractors, engineers, inspectors, and utility customers. Participate in planning and execution of daily and weekly work activities to support schedule adherence and production goals. Assist with preparation, review, and tracking of: o Daily field reports and production quantities o Project schedules and look ahead plans o Safety documentation, job briefings, and tailboard records o Customer required reports and project closeout documents Support underground utility construction scopes, including: o Duct bank and conduit installation o Vaults, foundations, and civil coordination o Material tracking, delivery coordination, and installation sequencing Traffic control, right of way considerations, and restoration activities Assist with EPC / design build projects by supporting: o Schedule coordination and milestone tracking o Procurement and material status tracking o Document control and drawing revisions o Change management and customer directed scope adjustments Track job costs, unit production, quantities, and assist with basic estimating and cost forecasting for scope changes. Support compliance with utility owner standards, OSHA regulations, company policies, and industry specific safety requirements. Reinforce safety first execution by participating in job briefings, tailboard meetings, site observations, and enforcement of PPE and safety controls. Communicate professionally with internal teams and external stakeholders to support coordination, issue resolution, and customer satisfaction. Utilize Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and company project management systems for reporting, tracking, and documentation. Maintain a professional and proactive approach while working under project schedules, operational demands, and changing site conditions. Perform additional duties as assigned to support project, customer, or operational needs.
Minimum Requirements:
Associate's or bachelor's degree in construction management, Engineering, or a related construction-focused field, or equivalent utility construction experience. 1-3 years of experience in construction, utility operations, or project support preferred. Ability and willingness to work in active power and utility construction environments, including underground and EPC project sites. Valid driver's license required. Ability to meet the physical demands and safety requirements of utility construction work. Willingness to comply with all company, customer, and regulatory safety standards, including PPE requirements.
Competencies:
Utility Construction Knowledge & Project Support Working knowledge of electric utility construction practices, including distribution, transmission, substation, underground, and EPC work. Ability to support field operations and project management functions simultaneously. Understanding of utility-owner requirements, permitting processes, inspections, and right-of-way coordination (or ability to develop this knowledge). Technical & Analytical Skills o Ability or willingness to learn how to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and utility work packages. o Basic understanding of construction job-site operations, sequencing, and safety controls. o Ability to support cost tracking, quantity tracking, and basic project documentation with guidance. Organizational & Time Management Skills o Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. o Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast‑paced, field‑driven environment. o Dependable attendance and punctuality. Communication & Teamwork o Professional verbal and written communication skills. o Ability to work effectively with both office‑based teams and field crews. o Willingness to ask questions, take direction, and collaborate with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Professionalism & Adaptability o Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, and positive attitude. o Ability to adapt to changing schedules, job-site conditions, and operational demands. o Commitment to safe work practices and continuous improvement.
