Job Title:
Field Engineer Job Description The Field Engineer supports the Project Manager in planning, coordinating, and overseeing complex heavy civil construction activities on a major infrastructure project. This role focuses on developing construction schedules, coordinating subcontractors and material suppliers, supporting project controls and reporting, and ensuring that work in the field aligns with design requirements, safety standards, and construction best practices. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to a large-scale, high-profile transportation project while working within a structured and professional construction environment. Responsibilities Review project plans and develop detailed construction schedules that align with project-wide activities and milestones. Coordinate with subcontractors on advanced material acquisitions and pre-construction deliverables to ensure readiness for field activities. Assist in obtaining quotes and drafting contracts to meet project requirements, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Prepare construction work plan packages and coordinate pre-construction meetings, confirming that all prerequisites for starting construction are identified and completed. Prepare, update, and distribute work activity schedules, and communicate schedule changes across disciplines and agencies to ensure proper advance notification and coordination of start times. Monitor daily field construction activities, participate in site operations, and provide layout checks and technical reviews of work against design and specification requirements. Obtain clarifications and confirmations from design engineers as needed to resolve technical issues in the field. Assist with subcontract administration and permanent material suppliers by monitoring correspondence, submittals, RFIs, and performance records, and maintain accurate payment records. Assist in preparing monthly reports for progress payments, schedule updates, and issue tracking, providing accurate and factual assessments of project performance. Participate in the preparation and management of change orders and claims, supporting documentation and resolution efforts. Develop and manage professional relationships with owners, subcontractors, consultants, and field personnel to support effective project delivery. Maintain a safe, clean, and productive work environment by enforcing established procedures and promoting adherence to safety standards. Protect project integrity and reputation by ensuring compliance with high standards of workplace safety and construction best practices. Identify and resolve changing site conditions or other impacts during planning and execution of the work, adjusting plans as necessary. Coordinate and attend pre-bid and construction meetings to support planning, coordination, and communication among stakeholders. Develop quality checks and coordinate permits with appropriate entities to ensure regulatory compliance and quality assurance. Assist in preparing crossing applications and work plans, and support quality control efforts performed by subcontractors. Manage and submit project close-out documentation in coordination with the client and third parties, ensuring all requirements are met. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution. 3 or more years of experience as a Field Engineer with a General Contractor, focused on construction projects. 5 or more years of construction experience on heavy civil projects. Bridge construction experience. Experience in construction administration, including coordination with subcontractors and suppliers. Knowledge of construction safety and current federal and OSHA requirements. Proficiency with project controls techniques such as cost accounting, basic estimating, forecasting, and contracts. Strong working knowledge of critical path method (CPM) and resource scheduling. Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office applications. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with project stakeholders. High attention to detail, with the ability to recognize and correct issues in documentation and field work. Demonstrated strong work ethic, with high motivation and a commitment to completing work accurately and on time. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a project team. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with construction management software or project scheduling tools is preferred. Background in heavy civil construction, including structures, earthwork, and complex infrastructure elements. Familiarity with critical path method scheduling in a large, multi-discipline project environment. Experience supporting change order and claims management processes. Experience preparing or contributing to monthly progress reports and schedule updates. Ability to develop and implement field quality checks and assist with permit coordination. Comfort working in a fast-paced, large-project environment with multiple stakeholders. Interest in working on large-scale transportation or rail-related infrastructure projects. Work Environment This role supports construction on a major high-speed rail infrastructure project in California's Central Valley. The Construction Package 1 (CP1) segment covers approximately 32 miles between Avenue 19 in Madera County and East American Avenue in Fresno County, including significant work elements in downtown areas. The project scope includes roadway and railroad grade separations, mainline viaducts, a tunnel, trench sections, utility relocations, roadway realignments, and a major river crossing over the San Joaquin River. The work environment is field-oriented and involves regular presence on active construction sites, coordination with multiple disciplines, and interaction with owners, consultants, subcontractors, and agencies. Work typically involves standard construction technology and tools, including scheduling and office software, and requires adherence to strict safety procedures and OSHA regulations.
