Job Description

JOB GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Building Permit Technician performs a variety of technical duties to support the Building Division, architects, contractors and homeowners by providing routine and technical information related to the issuance of permits and providing technical information regarding routine building code requirements and ordinances. This position is responsible for coordinating the permit review process with other departments and agencies, as required for the approval of a variety of building permits.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The City of Centennial retains the right to modify or change the essential and additional functions of the job at any time. Receives plans and other construction documents for review through the City's Permitting and Licensing System and ensures that applications are complete and ready to process.

Tracks, monitors and provides information regarding the status of building permits, plan checks, required inspections and related issues to other departments and to the public.

Provides service to walk in customers and returns all customer calls and emails within 24 business hours or before end of next business day. Calculates and collects building permit fees, use tax and related fees for the issuance of building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits.

Issues building permits under the direction of the Building Official.

Performs research on issues related to building permits and contractor licenses.

Develops and provides reports related to the department's activity for the Assessor's Office, elected officials and Community Development Department.

Maintains knowledge of city codes, requirements, community objectives and issues; maintains personal and professional standards of continuous improvement.

Maintains electronic copies of all permits issued, including category and fees paid through the City's Permitting and Licensing System.

Closeout of permits and building processes in the City's Permitting and Licensing System to allow the finalized documents related to building processes be moved over to OnBase for retention and retrieval.

Conducts audits or other formal reviews of projects to ensure accuracy of project valuations for purposes of proper building permit assessments.

Responds to records requests within the timeframes set forth in the Colorado Open Records Act and coordinate with the City Clerk's Office to ensure compliance.

Maintains the City's database of licensed contractors in the Permitting and Licensing System to ensure compliance of contractor's liability and workers compensation insurance requirements and applicable fees.

Responsible for the maintenance, updating and retention of records, data and content managed within the scope of the position. Acquires and utilizes knowledge of City's electronic content management systems and guards against the unauthorized removal, destruction or use of municipal records. Recognizes and respects that City employees forego any personal or proprietary right to the City's records including those that may have been developed, created or compiled during their tenure in employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND
ABILITIESKnowledge of:
  • Requires high-level knowledge and expertise of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software (MS Office Professional - MSWord, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint).

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Must be able to perform the essential functions of this job, with or without accommodation. Physical DemandsThe person in this position must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time; needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Occasionally moves office equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. The person in this position frequently communicates with staff, vendors, and residents; must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Must be able to identify staff, vendors, and residents, as applicable. Must be able to observe, assess, record, and interpret information. Work EnvironmentWork is performed primarily in an office setting with in-person and telephone contacts and may involve frequent interruptions. Equipment Used/RequiredFrequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy/fax machine, and computer printer.
