Role:
The Utility Locator plays a critical role in the construction industry by accurately identifying and mapping underground utilities to ensure safe excavation and construction activities. This position requires meticulous attention to detail to prevent damage to existing infrastructure such as water, gas, electrical, and telecommunications lines. The Utility Locator collaborates closely with construction teams, engineers, and project managers to provide precise utility location data that supports project planning and execution. By utilizing specialized detection equipment and interpreting utility maps, the Utility Locator helps mitigate risks, reduce project delays, and maintain compliance with safety regulations. Ultimately, this role is essential for protecting public safety, minimizing costly repairs, and facilitating efficient construction operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Experience operating utility locating equipment such as electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar. Basic understanding of construction site safety protocols and utility infrastructure. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and utility maps.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification in utility locating or related fields (e.g., NULCA certification). Previous experience working in the construction or utility industry. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping software. Strong communication skills for effective coordination with multiple stakeholders. Physical ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Responsibilities:
Conduct thorough site surveys to detect and mark the location of underground utilities using electromagnetic and ground-penetrating radar equipment. Interpret utility maps, blueprints, and as-built drawings to verify utility locations and identify potential conflicts. Communicate findings clearly to construction crews, project managers, and utility companies to coordinate safe excavation activities. Maintain accurate records of utility locations and prepare detailed reports documenting survey results and any discrepancies found. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to utility locating and excavation safety standards.
