Job Description
The Construction Inspector I (Building) is responsible for inspecting construction sites to ensure compliance with local, state and federal construction codes and ordinances for the County. Conducts field inspections at residential and commercial construction sites: inspects building, electrical, framing, footing/slabs, HVAC, plumbing, insulation, gas, water, and other items; reviews approved building plans and compares to actual construction; and ensures all construction activities comply with applicable local, state, and federal codes, ordinances, and standards; takes photographs of sites; and maintains photo logs and files regarding inspection activities.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must acquire required licenses or certifications within the probationary period for the position. Tasks require the regular, and at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Sensory Requirements Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, unsafe structures, traffic hazards, or rude/irate customers. Records failed inspections:
issues notice of violations and warnings to contractors, owners, developers, builders or other parties; works with contractors, developer, consulting engineers, architects and property owners to resolve conflicts, solve problems, and achieve compliance with all requirements; reports all issues of non-compliance to proper officials for prosecution; and maintains related documentation. Approves construction activities and final products which meet all building code requirements: maintains inspection records and related paperwork in division files. Consults with building owners, contractors, developers and the general public regarding codes, inspection procedures, and other issues pertaining to code compliance programs and services: responds to questions, complaints and/or requests for information; and explains and interprets division policies and procedures, ordinances and code. Maintains a comprehensive and current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and standards: maintains and awareness of erosion and sediment control methods, materials, inspection practices, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; and attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Associate Degree in Building Technology, Construction Management or related field required; supplemented by three years of experience in construction, building trades, site inspections or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
