Job Description

This position is responsible for the examination of drawings to ensure code compliance, supervising mechanical inspectors, and managing the work program for the inspection of mechanical systems to ensure code compliance. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processes employee concerns and problems, directs work, counsels, disciplines, and completes employee performance appraisals. Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed. Inspects commercial and residential construction. Reviews and approves plans for mechanical systems to ensure code compliance. Makes inspections to determine conformance with laws, ordinances, and codes; checks excavations, backfill, soil conditions, and location of mechanical systems. Informs and meets with owners, contractors, designers, and other city departments concerning mechanical code violations. Releases approved systems to the utility provider. Coordinates with other trade inspectors to review any cross-trade issues. Investigate unpermitted work and unlicensed persons. Files complaints with the state Licensing Board against unlicensed persons. Performs other related duties as assigned. Requires an Associate or Technical Degree plus additional vocational training in drafting, design technology, or mechanical inspections; with one to three years of mechanical installations or construction foreman experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Requires the following licenses/certifications within 18 months: Georgia Unrestricted Mechanical Contractor's License International Code Council (ICC) Residential Mechanical Inspector Certification International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Mechanical Inspector Certification International Code Council (ICC) Mechanical Plan Examiner Certification
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Building Official. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include city ordinances; the state licensing law; the fire code; ASHRAE and NFPA standards; the electrical code; the building, gas, plumbing, and mechanical codes; and the Georgia Accessibility Code. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY
The work consists of varied plan review and inspection duties. Requires the application of a variety of procedures, policies, and/or precedents, and moderate analytic ability in adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions.
SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of this position is to ensure that mechanical plans meet minimum code requirements. Daily actions or services affect individual clients/citizens; activity has a moderate impact on specific cases in the service area. Successful performance in this position contributes to the safety of Savannah residents and visitors.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, engineers, contractors, utility personnel, and members of the general public.

Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, motivate personnel, resolve problems, and justify decisions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed in an office and the field.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over the Electrical Inspector.
