JOB SUMMARY
This employee provides inspection services on active, proposed and future construction projects to affirm compliance with all applicable adopted Building, Fire, Life Safety, Mechanical, Gas, plumbing, and other codes as well as City ordinances pertaining to zoning, ARZA, HPC, Tree and Landscape, City Utilities etc. This employee is also responsible documentation and for communicating with citizens, contractors, tradesmen, and design professionals about the work performed.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
(examples, not all inclusive) Performs on-site commercial and/or residential building inspections for mechanical, foundation, structural, fire, life safety, electrical, plumbing, gas, and roof code compliance as well as for related zoning rules and affiliated ordinances. Will likely assist with inspections and assessments on substandard or unfit housing for compliance with minimum housing standards and make recommendations for required improvements. Answers telephone, email or other inquiries from contractors, sub-contractors, authorized agents, tradesmen, property or business owners, other City staff, or citizens on questions or conversations on code related or construction site matters. Completes all paperwork, data entry or documentation associated with the inspection process, interaction with the public, and other daily activities. Other duties as assigned by the Building Official.Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Must have a valid driver's license. Must possess or be able to acquire within one year of employment a minimum of two ICC certifications or alternate approved by the Building Official. Construction or code experience is preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Should have a basic understanding of construction, life safety or trade codes, and city ordinances. Requires a rudimentary understanding of construction techniques. Requires skill in oral and written communication in a tactful and considerate manner Should possess basic skills in operating a computer, calculator, architect's scale, tape measure, and reading maps. Should have basic knowledge of building materials and applications Should possess elementary skills in reading and interpreting plans and technical specifications for compliance with applicable codes. Should possess elementary skills in reading and interpreting various codes, ordinances and legal documents.PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
This position requires the mobility to work in typical office settings using standard office equipment. It also requires the physical fitness and stamina to be exposed to the outdoor elements in rough terrain providing the inspection services for construction sites. In addition, vision to read printed materials and computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone is needed. The employee is often tasked with sharing information that is not well received and may incur stress during and after these interactions.WORKING CONDITIONS
Although some of the documentation of work will be inside an office environment, the primary work environment of this position is in the field where the candidate will be exposed to extreme weather conditions and will be on occasion required to perform manual tasks. These tasks will include but are not limited to the following (lifting, pulling, pushing, climbing and walking over rough terrain).LIMITATIONS AND DISCLAIMERS
